USAirways/America West merger

Has any news started to come out on how the pilot seniority lists will be merged?
From what I gather I believe if a date of hire is adopted the America West guys will really suffer as the most junior Us Airways FO has 16 or so years seniority.Or will one of the 2 groups try to get the other to the bottom of the seniority of the other?

Since it's AW buying US Air it would seem to give their pilots leverage. The fact that US Air is in bankruptcy is also in favor of AW.

One other issue that will create discord is the number of furloughed pilots at US Air. If they are brought back eventually and placed ahead of the AW pilots there will be discord there for decades to come. Wonder why mgt never sees this?

US Airways

The national mediation board decided this week to allow a vote to take place at US Airways - the vote is to decide whether to leave ALPA and form their own union - the USAPA (US Airline Pilots Association).

PB,A course in anger management is needed my friend.I'm a east pilot and I understand your frustration, but calling the East pilots SCABS and low-lifes is a little over the top. Lakefield (remember the guy who really put this deal together) didn't ask me and I imagine he didn't ask you about your thoughts on a merger. It was out of the employee's hands on both sides from the word go!I've never been a big fan of ALPA, nor am I a huge supporter of USAPA. But one thing OUR pilot group needs is a change in leadership. And it's not just us, I think many of the airlines need a change in union leadership. Now don't get me wrong, I'm sure some of your anger is justified. We have our fair share of idiot loud mouths on the east, as I'm sure you do on the west. But the only way to get through this mess is with a change in leadership, either through ousting the current ALPA reps or changing unions. Either way, a fresh start needs to be made to proceed forward in unity. If you are really as unhappy as you sound, you need to go find another job man. This job is not worth sending your BP through the roof!

maybe you should go on strike then, instead of calling people names in a hysterical rant like that...

PB, I heard that during the USAPA road show in PHX, some of the west pilots were yelling SCAB during the presentation. I'm guessing you were in attendance. Your going to send yourself to an early grave over this.

Funny thing is your rant is just a replay of just about any merger that has taken place. "lucky to have a job" etc.

20,000hrs and six type ratings? Wow.. I wish I was as impressed as you are. Type ratings are no more the measure of a professional aviator than is the 4th stripe on a sleeve. Hang around long enough and not screw up too badly and it happens to most fliers.

but ALPA is being redinfined over this issue
ALPA is being 'redinfined' because of more events than just the AWA/USAir merger. USAir brought quite a bit to the table after the company gutted ALPA's contract with ALPA's agreement. USAir dumped its pension, dumped a lot of its debt and came into the AWA/USAir deal with a lot of assets, a concentration in the East that was/is unparalleled by other carrriers, a robust international presence over the Atlantic and a sweetheart deal on Airbus 350s.

For the average line pilot who can't see farther than the length of his ******, I expect your kind of diatribe. But I thought this was a Professional Pilot's forum where opinions were supported by more than emotion and fury. I guess I was wrong.

scab?

Pakeha-Boy, this is for you

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A strikebreaker is a person who works despite an ongoing strike. Strikebreakers are usually individuals who are not employed by the company prior to the trade union dispute, but rather hired prior to or during the strike to keep production or services going. Strikebreakers may also be workers who cross picket lines and keep working.

Ansett

Pakeha-Boy, can you tell me why your spineless, lying, lowlife thug brothers were ruining the professions of the Aussie pilots in 1989, using America West pilots and planes to fly Ansett routes. Shame on you for trying to call US Airways guys scabs.

Let's face it-the one and only, the ONE and ONLY, way to integrate seniority lists is by SENIORITY!!!! Pure and simple, I entered the business before, or after you, hence I fit in before, or after, you. The whole idea that some subjective standards like, "my airline was stronger than yours" is ludicrous.

Live by seniority, die by it. ALPA should have made that THE only merger policy back when deregulation happened, rather than standing by doing nothing. The outcome of deregulation was completely unforeseeable-American was thought a dead duck in 1978, but it is the only survivor without a trip through Chapter 11. AW, UAL, NW and DL once each. PA, BN, EA all disappeared. TW and USAir twice and they warrant being pasted onto to the bottom of the list (AA and USAir) as if infected dog doo-doo.

Johnnyramjet--nice one, was wondering when an AN guy would bring that up?
