Learn german, pass the test and go to Germanwings, Condor Berlin or Lufthansa CityLine.

Anything starting with 200 hours and your good to go.

Recriting at the moment:

eastern? YES (at least 6 FO gone in last 2 months)
Bmi regional? yes (interviewing yesterday)
Jet2? interviewing soon for start in sept
net jets? yes
gobespan? yes
my travel? yes
I have been applying to quite a few of these for many many months now with no luck. I even have friends working for some of them, and still no interview. I really must change my aftershave. :}

I think the problem most people fresh, or not so fresh, out of the training system will face at present is the haemorage of pilots from Fly Be especially those X-BACON. That dropped around 400 pilots looking elsewhere on the market at the start of the year. Most have moved what would have been seen as up to Easyjet, Baby, et al. But even BMI Regional would have got a small number of type rated people to look at. Heard from a CP the other day he was only recruiting X-BACON because "He knew what he was getting".

Fly Be are very short of crew and must be recruiting. They will probably hoover up from some of the smaller operators creating some gaps.

Keep at it. We've all been there and it's not easy ! or even Ryanair !

Max Angle 8th June 2007 10:29

bmi mainline are recruiting heavily and interviews are booked up past July I believe. I think names are only being selected from those already on file and in the interview hold pool. There is no more recruitment into bmed.

Longchop 9th June 2007 00:34

Ive got 1700hrs TT now......1500 on the mighty Dash8....and im struggling to find a jet job and im still a spritely 27yrs young!!:(

So, i think there is an element of truth in the opening of this thread.

However, more improtant things first, if anyone has any inside info for someone with my experience then drop me a PM!!:E

I think it will always be like this......never easy to find ANY flying job!!

For some reason, part of me wishes i was 21 with 200hrs again and a fresh new type rating paid for by Mr HSBC!.......I think with more newbies buying TRs, its pushing people like me(with experience) out of the loop!!

Its always been my dream to work for MYT...even now id still work for them after all the crap they've been through!!.....but to get in i need - 30k, a trip to Alteon and no guarenteed job!:yuk:

God bless all you Captains who have to fly with low houred guys into places like CDG when they have no time on type....and in some cases (very few im sure), a lack of real ability!:}

LeChuck 9th June 2007 20:31

Longchop, if you joined such a quite demanding aircraft as the Dash 8 right off from flight school why couldn't a newbie start his career with the A320 for instance? Provided of course an apropiate TR syllabus (extended) has been used for that level of experience.

There are many talented young pilots out there who are very capable of flying a mid size jet, as well as many others who will never have the skills needed, but thats a different story.

What I'm trying to say is that you just took a different route (very nice one, by the way) to achieve your goal of flying a jet. But that doesn't mean everyone has to go down that way.

At the end of the day it all comes to excellence in training and adequate handling skills what's needed to become a reliable F/O. Regarding experience, I'd say its critical when selecting Captains but not that much for F/O, although it's always desirable.

Just my opinion.

:ok:

Longchop 9th June 2007 21:47

I guess im fortunate........

I see it in my current airline.....people with minimal hours and minimal skill!!

Even worse is the case of - lots of hours lotsof experience and still no skill!! :{:{

Stpaul 10th June 2007 19:54

LongChop I am afraid that I find your moaning unacceptable.
Firstly you once had 200hours and were looking for your first job. Would you not have accepted any job , jet or TP at the time.
You equally could have gone to CDG flying a TP. I suspect that most ops depts will keep new pilots away from there until more experience.
You had the choice of which jobs to accept. You did not have to accept your Dash 8 job.
You had and still have the choice of paying for a type rating if you want.
Do not be critical of others for choosing a different route to you. Every job is just as competitive to get. I am sure that everybody would choose not to pay for a TR given the choice, they would happily fly a TP and work upwards.
But job markets change and if you want a job you have to do whatever it takes tosecure that job.(TP airlnes still ask for pilots with a TR)
I do not believe that low houred pilots that have a TR with no hours on type are getting put before you. Most airlines look for experience and have schemes in place to bond you for the course or pay for you.
Unfortunately, it is the way it is....get on with it!
I have flown both a jet and a TP and I enjoyed the TP experience more, so why do you want a jet job, is it the money????

flash2002 10th June 2007 20:26

So what should the problem be of flying into CDG. One of my first linetraining flight (low hrs, 737) was into CDG. I really don't see the issue?!??

Longchop 10th June 2007 22:21

St Paul......I wish i was winnning!....but i can tell you now, if anything, i am losing!:E

Honestly, joking aside.......Like i say, im a fortuante guy.....i went straight onto the Dash8 with 200hrs with a nice bond and no need to pay for a TR!

Now im looking for my next step on the ladder....do i move to the left seat on the Dash or move to a jet??
IVE chosen to move to a jet......and thats my decision....the fact that im struggling to get replies is nobodies fault!!

Im not whining...im telling you how it is!:p

I'll gladly PM you with my experiences if you question what i say about people who have very little skill who are here because they skipped the assessemnt phase by buying their own TR!

I have no beef with anyone!:ok:

Hookerbot 5000 11th June 2007 06:42

Look here PPJN

Stpaul 11th June 2007 09:12

You are so moaning! Use your time more productively to getthe job you want rather than posting on here.
Even those with a TR still have an interview, simulator assessment (and often this assessment is harder given that they have a TR on type), various tests (physco, num, verbal) and so on. I did and I'm rated on a jet!
You don't know how lucky you initially were, now you are beginning to see why people pay for TRs in order to get a foot on the ladder.
(I do not agree with paying for your own TR).
If you are not getting replies there may be many reasons, unless you know 100% for sure it is wrong for you to assume that its because of TR guys.

sapco2 11th June 2007 14:19

Two reasons why experienced TR turbo prop guys are finding it more difficult to get their first jet job:

1. Many jet operators need bums in the right hand seat immediately, so they're taking candidates from the flying schools simply because they won't wait for others to serve their 3 months notice period - it helps with late planning!

2. Taking on ab intio pilots makes commercial sense to the bean counters because it serves to undermine the profession as a whole by reducing co-pilot salary's from £40,000ish to £30,000ish, or even less.

Those of you who have served your apprenticeship on turbo props and waiting to move on to jets are currently getting a raw deal for those two reasons.

Chicken Leg 13th June 2007 10:44

Funny how attitudes change. Not so long ago, people who posted on this site that they had or were about to pay for a TR were abused no end. It was seen as an unacceptable decline in FO T&C's. It seems that perhaps this view was correct as this thread would indicate that a TR is almost essential to securing that first job.

I cannot think of a situation that would lead to me paying for a TR. I work to live not live to work and paying tens of thousands of pounds just for the privilage of being competitive in applying for a job sticks in the throat a wee bit. As much as I like to fly and would like to continue to do so, I will not pay for a job (apart from the not unsubstantial cost of getting my license in the first place that is!)

beamer 13th June 2007 11:04

Its the bean counters who make the decisions these days - low hour cadet pilots in commercial jet aircraft makes no sense to anyone other than accountants - they are cheap labour nothing more nothing less. The status of 'low hours' does not mean a great deal in itself - we all have 'low-hours' at one time or another in our careers. If you have ambition and ability it will come to the fore and in time you will find the position you desire but it may take somewhat longer than some expect. A frozen ATPL and two hundred hours will guarantee precisely nothing other than indicating a complete lack of experience - equally it says nothing about the aforesaid drive and determination to progress in this ridiculous industry. A reality check for some ?

BraceBrace 13th June 2007 11:11

Not only to the bean counters. Speaking to several TRI's in my company, they seem to prefer 300hr ab-initio's and young age as well. Reason? Learning someone good habits is much easier and safer than de-learning bad habits created elsewhere. The older the candidate, the more difficult the process becomes.
