hi guys,

very nice reading all the comments on Tyrolean...., i'm going for the selection anyway this 28th november....

does anyone have some concrete information for the selection.....? especially for the ATPL-theory test (is it in english or german?) How can i prepare myself best.., do I have to learn all my ATPL manuals by heart-again- or are there books with questions which prepare me for the subjects asked at the selection....Is there a way for me to prepare me for the psych. part of the grading....

I really don't have a clue as to what i can ecxpect :confused: , so any information/links/books/summary's/tips would be great..

Lot's of info on the selection can be found in German aviation forums (most of it German, though).

A couple of questions regarding this.

Firstly what is a 60%/64%/80% contract? Forgive me but I've never heard of it!

Secondly do you still have to pay for the selection? If so can anyone tell me what the exact cost is?

I don't know if they still charge for the selection. Used to be app. 300 EUR.

The TYR contract requires first year FOs to work 80% of normal block and duty hours only and get 80% of a nominal 1st year FO salary (i.e. the salary table already reflects the 80% restriction).

If they fly more (which they have to if the company schedules them) they get paid, but only on a yearly basis.

Tyrolean hired the last FOs on 80% part-time, resulting in an effective 64% contract that automatically changes to "real" 80% after 365 days. Snap-up t 100% is by crew demand..

The system is probably going to change to one where you regularly get 80% for the first 1-2 years and then 100%.

Hope this isn't too complicated.

Now comes the fun part, everybody including me, flew and flies 100% during the first year whilst on a 80% contract, due to the crew demand. After that year you receive the hours you flew over the 80% as overpay, that buys you a whole lot of beer !!!

As there is a constant loss of mainly copilots moving back to their home countries or onto bigger iron (e.g. Cathay LON) you can expect ongoing hiring, if not at the pace seen over the last 2 years. (The current resizing at Austrian might change that but at the time Tyrolean isn't affected.)

TYR doesn't do a lot of "reserve selection" as they don't expect people to wait for a call for several months. That doesn't say you're definitely with a positive selection but the waiting pool is more of a jacuzzi in size :)

Be aware that you're joining a very young crew. About a quarter of the current seniority list have joined in the last two years and hardly any of them are over age 30. So don't count on pensioners to vacate their left seats for you within the next 15-20 years. On the other hand we've been telling people that an upgrading after five years will soon be a thing of the past for the last ecade but so far that hasn't come true.

Is there any other info regards VO selection? Where does the language requirement apply? Would be interested ot hear from any Non Austrian applicants..! thanks!

victor charlie, as i remember it the CPL/ATPL questions were in english. Heard that they just changed the questions, roughly a month ago or so.

The language requirement is apparently not taken too, seriously, as there have been pilots who hardly speek any german at all flying for more than a year. But as Alpine Flyer said, you'll stay abit of an outsider if you don't learn some german. It's not that hard ;)

If I were really young, and could somehow convert to the JAR ratings, it would be very interesting to somehow be hired, live and fly for a very good airline over in western Austria.

But why? Well...the glittering (glanzenden, prachtigen) antiquities, palaces, music (Fest), beautiful mountains, valleys and rivers, paved bike trails and nice country roads, watch the service in a peaceful country church (like a small Wieskirche), enjoy the tasty food, the cloudy Weizenbier, (served by den sehr, immer attraktiven Damen). Oh well (-na ja?-). My wife and I plan to go again to Salzburg months after we move, and can save some cash. Wish I could quit this company and wander around there from April through November, from Zimmer frei to B & B.

Did I not mention the first-class cultural events, scenery and hospitality? My FOs help out with short-term memory loss, and whether we programmed the Douglas "steam-gauges" (just thump the oil pressure and N1 gauges..rotation...no help when thumping glass?).
