Anybody has some pictures of that 'famous' accomodation?
|
A330 fleet steady at 3 with 2 now operated directly by Wow and the 3rd being operated directly in Nov (Up until this month only GAY was operated by Wow and the other 2 by Air Europa). LAX not cutting but frequency increasing to daily plus Miami coming.
Accommodation is actually very good IMHO. |
Dunno what they are looking for? I have 5600 hrs on the 320/321 and didn't even get an interview ....:hmm:
|
Hey Winston - can you provide more details about the accommodations and what you like about it?
|
Hi Iver. Accomodation is clean and new. We have a 2 room apartment each with a bathroom. All kitchen equipment is provided. In addition we have a common area with a shared kitchen.
Only potential issue is the limited number of rooms and the increased pilot workforce which means some are having to spend time in the Base Hotel which is far from ideal due to the lack of kitchen facilities. We are hoping this will be resolved soon. We have to vacate our rooms when on the 10 days off which is not to everyones liking but we do have a storage area to leave stuff in. We have 4 cars available. All in all a great place with a great bunch of guys and girls. Flying is great (I can only speak of the 330) and challenging. |
Winston, if I may ask, what's the "take home" salary? I have seen the gross figures, but seems taxes are quite high (regardless of where you chose the base), so have been wondering what is the final figure, including all the deductions etc.
|
That will always depend on where you live. As with most contracts I presume you are paid a gross salary by contractor and you deal with taxes and other deductions in your home country. In some countries you will need to pay in social security payments (or equivalent) plus taxes. In some you only have to pay taxes. Some countries gives you the right to make tax deductions depending on marital status, number of children, wife's / partners income etc etc. In other words, net salary will vary widely depending on your personal circumstances.
|
Hi CP,
I am aware of that and know that in case of WOW contract you pay tax in your 'base', i.e. gateway port that you use to commute to/from duty in Iceland. For me it would most likely be SXF. I ran the gross figure thru a German online tax calculator and the results look rather bleak - looks like Ms. Angela would take away ~40% of my income. I do not fancy that idea, since I don't even live in Germany. However, there may be some tax deductions/returns/tricks I don't know of - hence my question what is the aproximate 'practical' take home pay - at least a ballpark figure for a CA. |
I'm far from being a tax expert but being in this business for 18+ years I would say that your positioning airport is not the deciding factor in determining tax liability.
Deciding factors are, among others I'm sure, principal main office where company is based, where your family reside and go to school, work and live their lives and also where you spend most of your days over a year. For example, if you position in/out of SXF, but you and your family live in Poland, I find it hard to believe that you would be tax liable in Germany. All you are doing is using an airport in Germany to get to and from work, that can hardly qualify for German tax authorities to claim rights to your taxes? Like I said, I'm certainly no tax expert so I'd be happy to be told otherwise with regards to this subject. |
Well, that tax arrangement info is straight from the horse's (agent's) mouth... I found it strange as well - hence my question to the insiders how it works...
|
Never trust agency for these things but I think you know that already. Speak to pilots who are there and in similar situation and then go with that info and a copy of contract to a tax expert in your home country. Once they have given you their view on it take that info to your local tax authority. Give your "solution" to them and ask for their guidance. That's basically how I have done it in the past and I always got a straight forward answer.

According to this thread on a.net
WOW owns 2nd A330 now? - Airliners.net Two WOW A321s are now operated by Avion Express due to crewing difficulties. Does that mean you can be based there and fly for WOW for even less? |
Looks like it. But if wow can't get crew on their contract then how is Avion finding pilots to fly for cabin crew salaries?
|
Recruiting agency
Whose agency is recruiting for WOW airline ?
|
Try Confair.
|
Thank you ever so much !
|
Agency seems to be changed to Direct2work/MountainHigh?
Any info what that could mean towards the conditions on offer? |
Good question and waiting for answers. Don't hold your breath though with Mountain High, First 2 Resource being in the equation now.....:hmm:
|
Ryan aviation and orionway are advertising A320 positions based in keflavik but they don't say which airline it is
|
Probably Avion Express..
|
yes the new agency is : Direct2work/MountainHigh
wish they were using the usual renowned agencies |
Conditions with MountainHigh are the same as the last ones offered by Confair; 8000 € for skippers, 5500 € for FO, subject to taxes.
Still trying to find out more about the bases in Europe, they said that would come. Current advertisements still for 20/10 in KEF. |
Word is Chief Pilot is gone (or left the position evidently).
|
Is the rumor about the chief pilot correct?
|
thanks a ton for the info nordicfly!!

WOW Air Announces $69.99 Daily Flights From The US West Coast To Europe, from Jan. 15. "Other airlines have been talking about offering these fares," ----- "But Iceland's WOW air is actually doing it." A trans-Atlantic fare war could be brewing as airlines that already offer some of the cheapest tickets between North America and Europe get set to do battle. WOW Air's California routes are serviced by three new Airbus A330 aircrafts, the first wide-body jets in the WOW air fleet. The airline operates the youngest fleet in Iceland with the lowest emission. Icelandic discount carrier WOW rolled out $69.99 one-way fares on Tuesday - Jan 10 for its flights from Los Angeles and San Francisco to four destinations in Europe. The fares—good for flights from Jan. 15 through April 5—are now being sold on connecting itineraries to Stockholm; Copenhagen; Bristol, England; and Edinburgh, Scotland. WOW billed the fares as "its lowest airline prices yet" for customers flying between California and Europe. But it's the $69.99 fares from California that are most likely to grab headlines Tuesday. CEO Skúli Mogensen told Today in the Sky he aimed to make the rock-bottom prices a regular offering. "I don't want to introduce this as a sale," CEO Mogensen said. "It's really setting the stage for what is coming." What is coming is a potentially bruising turf battle with Norwegian Air, another fast-growing "ultra low-cost carrier" that's also rapidly expanding on routes between the USA and Europe. It's likely no coincidence that WOW's just-announced $69 fares came after Norwegian Air officials spent much of the holiday season on a European media blitz promising $69 fares between Europe and the United States " sometime in 2017 ". "Other airlines have been talking about offering these fares," WOW Air said in a press release, adding: "But Iceland's WOW air is actually doing it." Mogensen was slightly more measured when asked directly if WOW's $69 fares were in response to the chatter from Norwegian. "What I would simply say is that I am thrilled to be introducing these fares on the trans-Atlantic market," Mogensen said. "I think there's going to be fierce competition on all routes." The company will add two new U.S. destinations later this year, adding service to Miami in April and to Pittsburgh in June. WOW began flying in 2012 and now flies to more than 30 destinations, including seven in the United States and two in Canada. WOW is already flying from its hub near Reykjavík to Baltimore/Washington, Boston, Los Angeles, Newark Liberty and San Francisco. |
$69 (advertised) fare US to EUR. Desperation in low-season?
|
.... but that's only the beginning .... now add on baggage (even handbaggage), seats and inflight refreshments for starters.
|
This is a good article about what it is like to fly as a passenger from LA to London via KEF on WOW at a very low airfare. It is good to hear they try to be upfront about the add-on fees to manage expectations:

Question regarding the 330 QCC.
Are you bonded, or not, if not is it by Bank Draft, or if from salary how much is the total, how long and how much is deducted per month? Thanks |
Wow pay for the CCQ but unless you are Icelandic, on a local contract.. On the 320 you will stay!
|
Hey SHUNT. How about A330-rated/experienced expats? Will they fly the 330, or is it for Icelandics only?
|
WOW Air is recruiting themselves now it seems:
https://www.latestpilotjobs.com/jobs/view/id/2262.html It appears the recruitment via obscure agencies didn't go to well. Hopefully the original conditions are back on offer... |
same as last year, hostel instead of apartment, pay cuts, foreigner treated like 2nd class, many locals with no clue of flying, poor training, no sops, no knowledge...it's just to keep you current and as soon as you find something better you go, as many are doing or did.
we have already lost our best guys, it's a pity. potential is huge. when management is coming all are lying to show happiness, is really just a parking slot to wait for better opportunities, nothing else. so sad. |
Based on the last two posts, why would anyone want to work there, ever? Even if only as a stepping stone, why do people legitimize these useless jobs that only drag the rest of the profession down into the mud?!
|
now only desperates are going there, or people that aren't aware of the problem. last year it wasn't clear the situation.
flying an airliner is a tremendous responsibility, people give their lives in our hands. here the priority is ashtagging on Instagram and posting on Facebook. no organisation, no solid sops (no sops at all) no training no safety culture. it's a big flying club, off we go. and font's upset the flight attendants, they get more money than you do as a pilot and they don't want to be stressed by a briefing that only foreigners perform. briefing is not necessary, nobody know any emergency commands and nobody even think that this extreme weather is a safety enemy. hope everything will go well, i doubt, but i hope. please keep distance if you can, or be absolutely honest with yourself, you don't care about others, you just fly single pilot and you will be safe. but if you are going to become incapacitated nobody will rescue you, nor the other souls on board in the middle of the Atlantic, at night, with bad weather. |
They will start KEF-TLV 4x weekly from September with 321neo.
That will be a helluva flight, even the great circle distance is 5284 km. |
I see that CAE are now handling the contracts. They claim 330 CCQ within a year. Can anyone up in KEF Pm me with a some ideas on what it really like.. rosters, how many DO in the working block, roster stability, accom etc. Thanks.
|
as i wrote in previous post, accommodation hostel, roster stability good, working block normally 20 (18 plus 2 travel days), money depends on your experience but gross as cpt between 8 and 12, so expect 6 to 8 net. ccq only locals or local contract. just very few FO did it with ext contract. CPT nobody, even high experienced trainers stuck on the 320. the huge problem is training (absent) and the culture (too easy going).
if you don't care, it's a good adventure. |
CA and FO Salary
Does anybody know the current CA and FO salaries as of today. Also what can a CA and FO expect in per diems every month on top of their salary?
