KAL's Surplus Crews
Memo from Korean Air's Senior Vice-President to all 747-400 Crews:
As you know there have been many changes to the schedule recently. SARS has caused a significant drop in passengers to and from most KAL destinations. As a result of reduced flights and a reduction in aircraft size on many other flights the flight hours projected for the B744 have dropped dramatically.
With this in mind the company will offer a one to three month leave of absence to any B744 Captain. The leave would commence in June and extend one to three months from that date. At the end of that period a simulator session to regain landing currency will be held if necessary.
The company will work out the details with the individual contractor. Items such as LOL or medical insurance will of course be continued. Only the basic pay during that time period will be eliminated.
Those wishing to take these leaves should contact KY Lee in writing by the May 15
In addition to this measure, scheduling will continue to dispose of excess vacation days over the coming months should the situation continue.
We thank you for your understanding during this very difficult time in our industry.

My point being that this is just the beginning of what's in store for the expats at KAL! If there's something else out there, I would suggest all 747-400, 777 and 747 Classic drivers to "jump ship" asap!
KAL's Executive Vice-President is due to leave shortly and if his replacement is a local, then God help all the expats!

you guys are still lucky at the KAL. Here in SQ the guys are in real s**t. Some of them have got the marching orders and the remaining have to proceed on No Pay Leave. During the period of NPL they will not be entitled to any of the benefits attached to their employment.

I'm sure like you guys at SQ and Asiana, this is only the beginning! Crews are being asked to take all their accumulated vacation days and their are presently surplus crews on the 777 and 747 Classic fleets.
This request to the 744 crews will I'm sure be directed to the other fleets mentioned shortly!
Not a good time for anyone right now.

Hey this is all a pretty good wind up. Loved it. Do you do parties and pie nights? Some of my mates on the 777 who have had their days off in June cut back to fit in extra flying have smiles on their faces once again thanks to your excellent humor.
Some one said to me yesterday that if KAL invented a cure for cancer then guys like you would still find out some way to rubbish them. But I said that was a little cynical. Then someone said to me that guys like you didn't have the brains of a three-year-old. But I stood up for you. Of course you do.
Once again. Well done. never, ever, ever lets the facts get in the way of a good joke.
Bye now. Don't forget the gloom medication. If you woke up happy by mistake you'd have nothing to whinge about.

I doubt this rumour is true. KAL's mgt is exemplary in todays world. Granted, the epochaliptic horse is hardly down the road, but the is hardly an extemporaneous lacking speach. Frankly I just enjoy landing those 744's in Incheon, and long may it continue I say.

Isn’t this quite a responsible reaction to the SARS (media hyped up) crisis? You only have to look at any S E Asian airport to see the damage that Asian airlines are suffering.
I know many companies both in Asia and Europe that are forcing staff to take compulsory unpaid leave rather than making staff redundant.
In my opinion any company that is trying to offset the damage without ditching staff permanently is to be applauded, not ridiculed, or have I completely missed your point?.
I know this is just what I’m doing at my company. Minimise the damage and retain staff for the inevitable rebound (I hope).
Additionally, this issue is not just affecting expats. All aviation staffs employment, irrespective of whether you are locally employed or expat status, is at risk.

KAL’s Senior and Middle Management (including the assistant VP’s and the Advisors) sucks! These guys are only in it for the money and nothing else. No one wants to rock the boat as they value their monthly bonuses too much!
Even FSB have an unwritten directive from KAL’s Senior Management to “go easy” on the locals during their simulator checks and FSB instructors who don’t follow this directive are terminated. The last FSB instructor asked to leave was a New Zealander on the B747 Classic fleet. Locals are "not allowed" to fail their Sim checks! Foreign Captains can fail!
