Thumbs up BA Recruitment (internal!)

Just noticed a very subtle message on the BA intranet advertising for DEP pilot recruitment. The catch, you already have to be on a BA or BAR contract! I guess this gets round the recruitment ban.

The criteria are for a valid ATPL or frozen ATPL, and the usual academics/ medical. Max age is a healthy 49!

I assume this will only be of interest to any self improver working behind a desk/cabin crew, or more likely pilots in the regions who fancy a mainline job.

Successful candidates will go straight on a JOC, followed by a job on the Airbus LHR or 737 LGW as an FO.

See the intranet for details...

The first signs of the inevitable recruitment.... whoops forgot about Iraq!

Are there many flying desks etc in BA with fATPL's who want to fly the real thing? I.e. will they meet the requirements internally or will they be forced to look outside?

When I was behind a desk there there were loads of us - I don't ever recall anybody getting a job though - even though they started internal recruitment just as I left. It was all a bit elitist - how could you possibly graduate from the ranks of the little people to become a pilot? What a dreadful thought!!! Shame because just about everyone I know of is now flying a Boeing or Airbus but BA obviously felt they weren't up to it...........(and before any Nigels ask no I didn't apply and couldn't afford to take the paycut now which is a fortunate position to be in!) Plenty of people went to a turboprop job outside and then re joined BA mainline though I believe.

A great company in general and I really enjoyed most of my time there.

There are plenty of BA staff who've been succesful on the TEP scheme and are now flying for BA. Nothing elitist about that.

I have to agree with Hand Solo - I know several people who worked for BA in other jobs but wanted to be flight crew. One paid for his own training and type ratings and is now mainline crew flying 747's.

So anyone who really wants to fly - go for it and good luck.

Internal Cadetships

Hear rumours going around BA that they still run the cadetship for employees although I never see anything advertised in the Beano or on the Intranet. Can I assume then that this is just a rumour or do they run it but keep it quiet to avoid being inundated?

How times change, I was BA cabin crew in the 80's with a frozen ATPL and I tried to get into the RHS from within, I was told from a rather self important Nigel in charge of recruitment called " Graham ......ings" you'll have to leave and rejoin.... I left and never rejoined.

Same here Propaganda

Had a bit more than a 1000 hours been through Britannia's selection as DEP but worked for BA whilst waiting for a course.
Spoke to POD who told me to leave and fly for Britannia for a few years and then rejoin
Had to laugh at that one. Also at the time he had denied that such internal recruitment had taken place in spite of the fact that I had met a guy only a few weeks earlier who was issued from within, just starting the sim.

I heard that it is a legel requirement to offer the said positions internally first, so expect it to be opened out to "jo public" soon!

Hand,

Good - glad to see internal applicants passing the selection. I never had the requirements to apply while I was employed by BA but I stand by my comments about it being elitist - not the selection procedure itself, that's a pass or fail thing - it was the attitude of some of the management there. Some of them were very encouraging, others not - particularly the likes of Graham Jenkins. I agree, there's nothing elitist about passing a BA selection procedure and flying an Airbus or Boeing for them. Should have made myself clearer.

Cheers.

Received a phone call last week from BA recruitment.

Hello may speak to Mr bla bla?
Mr bla bla speaking.
My name is ..... from BA recruitment, do you have a moment please?
Yes i do, how can i help?(thinking to my self YES YES)
Well, i have your application in front of me however is it correct that you do not have 2 years service with BA?
Yes,That is correct but....
Well i regret to inform you that in order to be considered for the scheme you need a minimum of 2 years service.
But Ms....... i am only out by a month can't you still consider me?
I am affraid not, it is company policy. As Cold as that!
And why even bother calling me! just write and say''We wish you all the best''.

So not having a problem with my qualifications but being rejected for having 1 yr 11 mnts instead of 2 yrs is a bit below the belt. Sorry to bore you all.
What is your opinion?

Reapply to 1 month and best of luck to you!

BB,
It is too late anyway, pal. I tried every avenue possible, the only excuse found in the''Company policy book'' - i need to have 2yrs service before the closing date of 29th Jan 02 - told that by numerous C's.
So i handed in my notice and quite frankly told them to go and **** themselves. No need to be professional.
Remember ''The world's Favourite Airline where our staff are our Number one asset'' Ha Ha Ha Ha!

Hand solo, your quote''nothing elitist about that'' what is your reasoning? You seem to defend BA on every thread?
Unless my old man was''Captain Vickers'' i do not think i stood a chance.

Because most of the criticism is wholly unwarranted. Granted your case is a prime example of some of the extreme stupidity which can prevail within BA management, but the fact that they rejected your application because you were one month out is stupidity, not elitism.

When I went through flying school I met about 80 or 90 TEPs. Only three were related to BA pilots. More were existing BA staff from other departments. The remainder were from a fairly broad mix of social backgrounds; young and old, post-graduate degree holders to A-level students, moderately wealthy to practically destitute, 100 hour PPLs to zero flight time. The only common thread was that they'd all put a lot of work into getting in to BA, and some had succeeded at their third attempt.

I'm sorry that your application didn't get past the drones who set an arbitrary two year rule, but that doesn't mean Daddy has to be a Captain to get into BA. Had it not been for an inexplicable time limit then you'd have had as good a chance as everyone else.

Hand solo,
Understand what you are saying but I am sure if i knew the right person inside, the 2 year rule can easily be overlooked.
Happens on a daily basis everywhere you look.
Crew are being moved from the 737/A319 on to the 747/777,
so from where are they going to replenish the requred crew? Externaly of course. To apply externaly the requirements will jump up and i again will not be elegible to apply because i don't have experience on aircraft over 25t or a fast military jet.
Missing a month, do meet the criteria internaly but not externaly. Can i win? **** No.

Sir Donald,

Leave and get a job elsewhere - then you are winning. BA will recruit again in the future - concentrate on putting yourself in the frame - they won't change the goalposts to suit you. It can be done.

Best of Luck.

Angry

I have to say that having experianced,BA's,"Superb Fairness",at first hand i am more than qualified to speak of these,"Internal",opportunities,i applied to the previous one about a year-and-half ago, according to BA's own criteria,i possessed the most hours(1900 to be exact),suitable Commercial Operational experiance(2-crew Turbo-prop),Licence Conversion via CAP509 outfit,No Age exclusion, only to be told that i was,"too old",(38 years-old)to be put through a Jet Orientation Course despite passing every exam/Checkride first time!To my absolute horror, other subsequent candidates were,"Nitpicked",and also excluded,Guess who got onto the scheme!Yes,A Young Blonde lass,(good luck to Her)who's Dad is a Senior Captain at BA!Well,Balpa will be asked to look into my case,oh yes my hour spread,2300(at present),1400 Turbo-prop(Beech 1900D),470 Night,1100 X-country,loads of Instrument time, need i go on?I do not mind losing out to someone but as long as the scheme is handled fairly.

just as a matter of interest. Why did you spend 300 hours in the beech 1900 doing circuits? With 1400 hours beech, and only 1100 x-country it sounds like you had to do a lot of circuits?!
More importantly, you dont mention what hours 'the blond lass' had. She may have had a 737 type rating and 2000 hours command on type for all you (or we) know.
I know I am going to upset you, but deal with it. Aviation is unfair. Some people get great breaks, others get bum deals. Its the way it is. Your energies would be better spent looking for other jobs, and moaning at BA is not going to make them want to suddenly hire you. You would be better off getting more suitable for the next round, not making a name for yourself.
For what its worth, I dont fly for BA Mainline. I dont have the best job. Others with less have done better than me at the moment. Thats the way it is. I hope that I get a shot at mainline, but dont expect them to do me any favours. Thay can pick and choose. I hope that I have what they want when its my turn.

Sits back and ducks!
