EVA Air Pilots !!
Surfing the net, I noted today that EVA Airways is again looking for B744/MD11 F/O's. Any EVA pilots out there who could shed some light on what it's like to work for the company. Any information on things like - starting and maximum salary for F/O's & Cpt.'s / - rosters on MD11 versus B744 / - how long to command / - expatriate live in Taipei / - selection process info, and so on would be highly appreciated. For your information:
Eva terminated cotracts for 62 Captains and Cruise Captains after 9-11(expat pilots).
Pilots live in one building like hotel 27/7
under video surv. no visitors after 11pm.
Training is not so good.
My advice: Take type rating and run,run....

Eva has never hired expat F/Os, none of the Taiwan carriers have. In fact the two carriers, Eva and CAL are struggling with the authourities right now on whether or not it will happen.
There have been Relief Cmdrs hired at Eva but this is the first time for DE Expat F/Os. The pay at Eva is quite low, about NT$100.000/mo. The rest (benefits etc) is probably just as poor, although I know a couple of Captains over there and they say the rostering is getting better. They both live in NA.

50 hours guarantee - about US$ 3,200
75 hours - about US$ 4,300
Plus a 13th month salary, after a full year service
Per Diem - US$ 3 / hour
Vacations:
0 to 3 years - 22 days
3 to 5 years - 25 days
One annual free ticket for all family
- Some maneuvers during MD11 simulator check:
Normal Takeoff
Steep turns and stalls
Manual approach and landing
One engine inoperative approach and landing
For type rated pilots: Two engines inoperative approach and landing
Take your seat!

50 hours guarantee - about US$ 3,200
75 hours - about US$ 4,300
Plus a 13th month salary, after a full year service

You're right, they're first interviewing pilots with previous or current experience on MD-11 and B744, but I'm not sure that eliminates all opportunities.

Living in Taipei
The question was asked about bringing family to Taipei. I lived there for almost three years from 1995 to 1998 and enjoyed the experience. I was single but knew quite a few people with families there. Most of the long term ex-pats choose to live near Yangmingshan, about a one hour drive to CKS. It is in the foothills to the north of the city and that is where the American and Japanese schools are.
The cost of living is high if you try to keep an American or European style of living, but can be reduced considerably if you can live more like the locals. Furnished apartments in Yangmingshan are fairly expensive. In the 90s they were around NT40,000 and up. Closer to Sungshan airport ( downtown ) nice furnished two bedroom apartments were in the low to mid 30s.
Of course if you lived in Yangmingshan or downtown you would have to worry about transportation to CKS or the EVA buildings. They are various bus companys now that charge about NT 110 to the airport from Sungshan, slightly less to the EVA building. A car is the other alternative but they are expensive to purchase and operate.
With the high costs involved and the low salary that EVA is offering it would be very difficult to manage financially. If your wife could work that would be a plus, but she would have to get employment somehow. The first problem there would be getting the right to work in Taiwan. It doesn't come automatically since she is your spouse. She would have to get that from a company willing to hire her. It can be done. If she speaks good English, there are always advertisments for English teachers and some do provide the authorization to work. It is reasonable to make about NT 500 per hour in that line of work.
Taipei is a messy-polluted city with bad traffic and bad air quality. Putting that aside, the people are very friendly and it is a very safe place to live. There are lots of things to see and do on the island. Hiking is fairly popular in the hills near Taipei. The Japanese built a large number of trails during their occupation and they have been expanded since. The only good beach is on the extreme southern tip of the island at Kenting.
