Core Norwegian Contract

What is the chance of getting a core Norwegian contract after 2 years of standard contracting? I quite like the idea of living in Norway. Thanks.

Contractors from 2011 & early 2012 had the opportunity in 13-15mths (but as FO) some Capt's gave it a go, & subsequently were given immediate "leave of absence" to continue as Contract Capt if they wished . . some didn't.

So, since Summer 2012, approx 85 "Core" vacancies created, approx 250(?) Contractors recruited. Bjorn Kjos has been quoted as having stated "no more core vacancies" & relations between him & the Union have not approached "cordial" for quite some time.

Do the Maths & make your bet. At the current rate of expansion, which is primarily outside "K Area - Core " jurisdiction, I would suggest the wait could exceed 2 years. The 2 year thing was a deal between the Union & NAS that, if a base was viable "permanent employment" would be offered after 2 years. This could (in certain circumstances which HEL doesn't appear to have fulfilled. . . but well, nonetheless ) be extended to 3 yrs. However, as I understand it, the only requirement is that "permanent employment" would be offered at the end of 2 (3 ) years. Nowhere, AFAIK does it state a "Core " contract will be awarded.

Don't forget BK is a Lawyer, perhaps the Union should have employed one superior to him.

If you express even half interest to the agencies (PARC/ARPI/Confair. . .reverse the order for suitability for purpose) they will tell you, it is no secret.

8884€ Gross + 17€/block hour. Tax down to you (more or less, depends on the agency ) social charges witheld in accordance with your base. Well, its all a bit of an over-simplification after the word "Tax", if you join you will find out

This may (unfortunately) be the answer to the OP's opening query

Norwegian’s board today decided on a new company structure to ensure international growth and necessary traffic rights. Norwegian Air Shuttle ASA will still be the parent company. Two fully owned subsidiaries will be established, each with their own air operator’s certificate (AOC) – one in Norway and one in the EU. The company will offer pilots at bases outside of Scandinavia permanent employment.

Here are the main changes:

- A new operating company in Norway that will operate from today’s Scandinavian bases

- All pilots permanently employed in Scandinavia will be transferred to the Norwegian operating company. They will keep their current wages and conditions. Other Norwegian Air Shuttle ASA employees will not be affected by these changes.

- A new EU operating company will be established in order to secure necessary traffic rights to fly out of Europe

- In line with legal developments in Europe, fully owned country-specific resource companies will be established

- Hired pilots will be offered permanent employment locally in the respective resource companies. Pilots in Finland are the first to be offered permanent employment by the first quarter 2014. Pilots at bases in Spain and England will follow.

Advantages: Employed status as opposed to contractor status, subject to EU employment laws etc etc, notice period and social security rights, unemployment rights etc. Does this mean ALL Agency Pilots will transfer to the EU Company? Retention of Command status.
Disadvantages: Tax paid in full at base, although most pilots have to pay local employment taxes at the moment so should not be worse off. ( AT the moment 10k gross Spain currently nets down to about 7 to 7.5K after tax with existing agency) UK based Pilots will be harder hit by UK Tax laws.

Another big disadvantage is that they can close down the subsidary that is not generating income or if they would like to get rid of the contracts there and sign new ones (most likely worse) and the unions will have no power left.

Will there be a separate seniority list or will each base be it's own operation as far as seniority, recruitment etc goes?
