Will Emirates eventually create some bases in Europe?

90 super-super jumbos and more wide bodies to come out of Boeing/Airbus factury... so Will they create some bases in Europe (like FRA, CDG, BCN, MXP,...) do you think?
If they donīt, well for sure they will do W patterns (kind of UAE-CDG-JFK as well as UAE-JFK, UAE-FRA-JFK, etc..)

5th Freedom Rights

I can't see any point in going anywhere via CDG, FRA, LHR/LGW etc unless they have 5th freedom rights. I can't see any European country falling over themselves to grant those rights unless there is one hell of a payback. Just more competition for their own flag carriers. In the old days a/c stopped in the gulf on their way to the Far East because they didn't have the legs to go direct. That is almost all finished now.

From what the guys in EK say, not a chance in hell. They want to keep the money in the UAE. So dont count on it!

What do they mean to keep the money in Dubai? If the do W patterns they will be able to do UAE-FRA-JFK and the route FRA-JFK will bring money to Emirates, not to Lufthansa
That's pretty much obvious when you look at the fleet and amount of high capacity aircraft they have.

seasexsun,

Have you HEARD of bi-lateral traffic rights? EK can only operate FRA-JFK of, for that matter, between any two other countries if BOTH countries allow it- and that happens rarely.

By "Keeping money in Dubai" he means that the Dubai Government (who owns EK) would rather EK emplyees lived and spent their salaries within the UAE.

wizofoz, no problem, it's all about money, so if they can increase the traffic out of european airports for cheap and good transatlantic flights they will be more than welcome! Look at Ryanair and Easyjet destroying the medium haul of LH, BA, AF, but who cares, that's what we call globalization, mate!

ahahahahaha
EK employees are peanuts for the local economy

This topic has been discussed over and over again and the answer is still the same: No.

It is not an issue of scheduling, crew levels, logistic planning or potential costs of having EU/US bases. The issue is that the UAE leaders want you and your family to move to Dubai, EARN AND SPEND your money there. This way the real cost of employing you is much lower since the same people that pay you are the very same people who send you most of your monthly bills, owns the malls, the restaurants etc etc. You earning your money in UAD but spending them in EU/US would be no good for them.

So the whole Dubai economy is based on EK crews ahahahahahahahah
Once again, and again and again, W pattern would still allow EK crew to be based in Dubai and do kind of FRA-JFK, MAD-JFK, CDG-JFK routes. No problems and they have the planes for that market.
EK guys will do Dubail-Paris then nightstop for 24 hours and do paris-New York and night stop and go back to europe and nightstop and back to Dubai, Maaaaagic isn't it

Ehh, who said that "the whole Dubai economy is based on EK crew". Stupid comment from someone who has nothing better to come up with.

How many crew are employed by EK today? In 2-3 years? Multiply this nr with the amount of money the crew and their families spend in Dubai every year and I think you get a quite substantial amount of money that is being "re-invested" into Dubai.......

captainprop, like I said before, what EK employees spent at dubai is PEANUTS. It's a lot of money for you, but for dubai it's peanuts.
Hope this helps

Seasexsun
maybe were you thinking of EK to buy an existing local carrier to rename it Emirates Germany or whatever?
That would be different in terms of process eventhough the result would be the same.
By the mean time i doubt they are interested in such investments.
By the same time i am pretty sure we flew together on one of these wonderfull 747's.

EK used to do JFK via HAM, but I agree, from what i heard no bases in Europe, dont need anyway, and economy development isnt happening there right now. I believe they envision to connect other markets, eg Africa and South America with Asia specially China and India those are badly explored and high potencial markets, not to forget Russia, although EK hasnt tapped that source entirely yet. I think what is possible is that EK starts taking stakes in companies abroad to secure them as feeders as they are not willing to join any alliance.

Its not just an economic reason of having employees spending money back into the Dubai economy ( thats the biggets one) , its also a question of control and liability. If you are employed out of the UAE you will have certain rights that you do not have in the UAE. Given EK,s blatant disregaurd for employment contracts they could open themselves up to litigation in these ( basing ) countries. Even if your contract is in Dubai under UAE law. Thats why some CX 49ers were able to take their case to courts outside of Hong Kong to countries where CX had ( basings).

Besides I have heard it from Top Managements mouth directly. EK will never base crew abroad. So if you are considering this in your decision to come here , you are far off the mark. Its working with DXB crews and they will continue with this .

Believe me , if they were to open basings by some miracle. You would have to stand in a very long line for the said mairaculous base as there are many ahead of you in the que. Rem also that many of the senior people are still relatively young , so you would wait a very very long time for a base . Halas , wont happen.

p.s if you think you are able to commute you are even more mistaken. Thats off course if you would like to travel subload on your 2 days off between flights. With no jumpseat policy and a very punitive HR system should you not make it back for your flight.
You will also by company policy have to ' notify' EK that you are leaving Dubai. So they have a record of you being away.If you do not notify them and you miss your flight then its a double whammy from the HR thugs.

You need to make informed choices !
