Unemployed - how many are we?
Unemployed pilots is a very silent group. Many companies went bust and some pilots got rehired. Many are leaving aviation due to the worsening conditions. Some clue can probably be found when companies tells us they receive thousands of applications for their few positions available.
Of course nobody know - but lets hear some qualified guesses

Better to qualify your statement and say that: Many pilots are leaving aviation because they don't want to work in China in Korea, in Vietnam, or in the desert . . . where plenty of jobs are available for current and qualified expats.

I must say that I do not agree with your statement at all.
The reason it is simple, companies keep advertising for pilots because this is one manner for them to make their statistics of the actual market conditions so they can do some “work” on the amount of salaries and benefits.
You are taking for granted the fact that there are advertisements for jobs and that ALL pilots will be employed which this is not to happen.
And I am not talking about selection process here.
Another matter is that companies still practicing age discrimination with older and very experienced pilots, because all of the advertisements the requirements are well below 60, therefore if you account to that “silent mass” of unemployed pilots, you certainly might discover the figures are bigger.
Certainly the world is not made exclusively of young people…

What would also be interesting is to see how many of us are working in poor conditions, risking their licences by accepting to fly in illegal conditions, lowering their pants every day, with working contracts not even worth the paper they are written on, not even supported by the brokers.
Not counting the racism and "national preference" you are facing, especially in Korea, Morocco, China. The list is not exhaustive unfortunately...

Assuredly you are aware that the work reality outside western culture is far different from the culture of entitlement and escalating expectations that you may be accustomed to and may have taken for granted.
Because if you were to take up a job as a "guest worker" with an outfit in the desert or east asia you would necessarily have to suspend your pride and ego. In most cases you would be working as a glorified slave with no rights, no seniority and a roster that is ever changing.
Many experienced western expats quit because they cannot cope as second class citizens in a harsh, discriminatory work environment. The initial adventure and glitter of flying factory fresh jets soon gets old.
Notwithstanding the culture shock and social upheaval of transplanting your wife and kid(s), the 3RD world life style is hardly appealing to laid off senior citizen pilots from the western world.
Ideally, the expat jobs as such are well suited to homeless, divorced pilots without kids and baggage, without expectations beyond being paid to fly from point A to point B, one day at a time.

if you want to feel better read bmi thread
they think that all will be ok and they wont have to work for a living cos there's loads of jobs for pilots.
all you have to do is get in the same holding pool and become a "swimmer"
dream all day and spend dad's money
make sure all the people in the street know that your'e going to be an airline pilot.
It's very simple
and don't forget to play bucks fizz The land of make believe all day long
this is the recipe for everlasting content

Hi Guys! the situation is worst the we think!!!
I lost my job on B737 as well,and I am ready to go far and continue to fly!
I am ready and happy to experience asia! very few contacts via direct, rishworth, parc...
Do you know how many airlines in asia??, or other agencies to apply and have then a possibility to do a screening!!??
Help!!! please send any info , or emails, or website for ASIA!!!!
