Airport/Home Standby

Hi everyone,

Just thought I would start a thread about airport/home standby for each of the main airlines in the UK: BA, bmi, flybe, easyjet, ryanair, flyglobespan, jet2 etc...

What's the procedure for your particular airline?
What exactly is airport standby...and how long are you at the airport for?
Home standby...how long are you on standby...the whole day, 12hrs, 8hrs??
How often do you get home standby and how often airport standby?

Thought it would be interesting to see each airlines standby procedure especially now that some companies have a surplus of flight crew.

Cheers.

Well, at flybe:

Home standbys are generally either six or 8 hours long. My roster tends to have 2-3 standbys a month maximum and I'm very rarely used. The early standbys are usually 0400-1000L and the later ones anything from 0700-1500L to 1200-2000L.

Airport standbys do happen however I personally haven't been rostered one for about 6 months. I think they've more or less disappeared completely in my base (one of the large and busy bases). Their maximum length is 6 hours and when combined with a flying duty the total duty time cannot exceed 8 hours.

Hope this helps

P.S. we certainly don't have a surplus of aircrew at the moment with start of the Greek operation. In fact, there is the possibility of slight recruitment if a few things work out.

Thanks for that info officeboy.

I think most other airlines are pretty much the same then although I think BA have a month standby period, 1 week off followed by 3 weeks standby and you may get this about once per year.

What do you guys do during airport standby? Read up on Notams etc..read a newspaper, browse the net or chat to colleagues etc....???

P1.
