Opened the letter last night, very dissapointing to hear! Been rumours around for a while now. Don't think it's critical as most carriers are cutting back everywhere. Not the first and won't be the last to cut overheads in this current climate.

Is this the same outfit that is/was receiving a hefty public subsidy for the West Coast routes - Oban/Coll/Collonsay??? If it is then I would suggest that asking staff to reduce wage, whilst receiving public subsidy, a question would need to be asked regarding the validity of the whole excercise

Don't take their word for it. Make sure that they open the books to allow someone qualified to verify that they NEED pilots to cut their pay. It all sounds like a slimy ploy to me. Kind of dirty trick our lot would play!

They (well AAG) could always find an excuse to NEVER give us an annual payrise - make damn sure they give you a good reason for this paycut.
Remember, with inflation, no payrise is a paycut, they're taking the pi$$ with this one. . . .

5150 Not commenting on this issue specifically, but as a point of order if I may....RPI (a measure of inflation) is actually negative so no pay rise is in fact a year on year gain.

Whilst it might be economic sense to shaft the boys and reduce pay in the short term, where is the loyalty?
When the upturn comes and the boys leave for pastures new, as its sure to do, where is the loyalty?
Reduce pay now and watch the chaps (chappesses) leave when things improve.

Stick with it Guys & Girls, Highlands is a damn good company and will survive. A little reminder, BA, Virgin, Globe., etc, and EVERY other Aviation company are having to make cuts. (subsidies or not!) Talk of exceptance or loyalty are neither here nor there. Its a tuff time and companies have very difficult choices to make to enable them to survive. Unfortunately some won't, no matter how hard they try. I believe Highlands will with the required support.

Sad to see things not working out too well for the Hiway crews. I'm out of the loop now with company politics, but I do have a very large amount of respect for AM's integrity and the personal sacrifices he made to keep the company afloat and pay everyone's wages through the last round of dark days a few years back.

Don't think the recesion has played much of a part in Highlands current situation other than keeping the crews with them.
BA, Virgin, etc are all in a very diferent situation as well.

Prudence in these tough times is not a bad thing - and a pay cut is better than redundancies - the company is a good one and if it can tighten its belt and control costs and offload the bits that don't work it would be a help - massive cost savings can be achieved at Highland with a little foresight and balls.
Alan and Basil have been in the chair for a long time - they are bloody good guys and have kick started many sky gods careers on the path to success and jets when no other bugger would have given them a second look...
They are local chaps that set up a small freight airline that has turned into a big management nightmare with external shareholders and numerous types, with numerous problems to match..
They need help and support from all that are currently employed as well as needing some external help i think..... but thats my own opinion....!
Crying over a 5% pay cut when you have only been there 5 minutes and thinking the world owes you is not a wise move in this market.......head down, smile, help the company in any way you can and ride it out....! your other options are fairly limited....

Has anyone completed, or is currently 'employed' in, the Airline Experience Programme (AEP) that Highland Airways offer? I would be interested to hear what life was like and if the promises of flying experience and a type rating at the end (2years) are fulfilled.
Believe he's working Mon-Fri with weekends off.
