Ryanair to partially close Shannon Base
Jumpseat crew in STN tonight say Ryanair briefed staff in Shannon today that they are to partially close the base - lose 2 aircraft in April - 20 pilots and 40 cabin crew to go. Could not verify it. Anyone at the meeting? Any news on other bases?

This highlights just how cold and calous ryanair management are.
Shannon was nothing but a pawn in ryanair's failed attempt at taking over Aer Lingus.
It just goes to show that they could never have been trusted with a monopoly in the Irish market.

Alternatively it goes to show that they are flexible and pro-active.
Base doesn't work ? or as in VLC don't get the deal we want ? well
off we will take our business elsewhere.
It all depends whether you look at it from your viewpoint as an employee, happy at the base you are employed and peed off at it's closing/shrinking. . . . or, whether you look at their viewpoint ,always looking to keep costs to the minimum at any price , therefore no loyalty to any particular airport.
If you think your personal preference, or continuing service to the public at a particular airport even remotely impinges on their business decisions, it's time to come into the real world.
Most other companies are just the same, the only difference is that they cloak the dagger with some sweet sounding P.R bullsh@t, which makes no difference at all except to those gullible enough to believe it.

As an aside, if the partial closing down of a base is true then I have sympathy for the local workers. At a time when Ryanair seem to be recruiting however, it would seem that they will be offered bases elsewhere.

"admirable business decision" . . . no, but a business decision ? yes.
If you are looking for anything resembling compassion from them, well you really are dreaming aren't you, if you are looking for a company to make a decision that may screw up your plans to live somewhere ,but possibly keep your job in the meantime at least, that is more likely.
I will be surprised if anyone involved in SNN is not offered the chance to transfer elsewhere with the number of new aircraft due, but I would not be shocked of course if proved wrong.
Anyone that knows the beast shouldn't really be shocked by anything they do, the rest of you seem to be blind to the reality of how they think & operate.
I don't necessarily agree with much of what they do, but you certainly can't accuse them of straying very far from their chosen modus operandi.

The Minister For Transport should sort out the mess he is leaving the travel industry in before it spirals out of control!! what a disgrace lumping a 10 euro tax on pax travelling from Irish airports in the middle of a
recession!! Im sure this has been debated here before..
As everyone knows passenger figures are already declining, tourism in this country is dwindling..
And the government are complaining about all the job losses in this country?! Why dont they think about the effect this will have on ALL Irish airports not just Shannon and its not just the staff in Shannon who are going to be affected, this is going to effect alot more than the people directly employed in the airport its going to ruin alot of feeder businesses in the area, this is just the beginning!!

FR really has gone out of their way on this one to accommodate the base requests of those pilots moving out SNN, there wont be many, if any, sad faces amongst the pilot group.
For the cabin crew... that apparently still has to be ironed out...
who would have guessed!!!!

Can anyone tell me just exactly how many airlines that have made a profit from operating scheduled services out of Shannon?
I can think of several that have tried but who have ended up going down the pan.

I know a few people out in Shannon that have been offered a base transfer to Edinburgh with the latest news, shame they cant get STN!!
Its ironic that a couple weeks back Ryanair paid for a party and gave Shannon cabin crew cheques for 300 euros for having the best average spend than any other base and then this.
