Vacation by Points System or Seniority ?

I am interested in finding out how your company does itas we are looking at it in ours. A survey of as many who would be so kind as to let me how your company awards vacation.

Like Vacation during July August and the busy time.

I am partial to a Seniority based bid system

Do you have a seniority based bid system or point .

I think Seniority should be respected and Seniority rewarded by awarding vacation bids by it

but there are those who argue a points system is more fair as those at the bottom of the seniority would neve get vacation during peak periods ?

Thanks for your input and time.

Points based system. Shorthaul European carrier. Is suits me fine cause I have no kids so don't need the time off at peak times and also should mean that even some junior guys should be able to get peak times at some point so fair all round.

Group based system.
Employee allocated to group A, B or C when joining company.
summer 2007 priority A then B then C
winter '07-'08 priority B then C then A
summer 2008 priority C then A then B.
etc.
Highest priority get whatever they ask for regardless (max 2 weeks during peak), second group only if space left, third group just have to be lucky no one else asked for the same period...
Seems fair to me, means I don't always get what I want though....

XLNL - What he said! Used same system, they called it High Bid, Middle bid and Low bid and you roatated through the system so that every third year you got what you wanted but as I didn't have kids always bid for European low season then took holiday in Southern hemispere. A seniority based system is unfair.

Seniority based leave systems are unfair. The airline industry is cyclical. In big companies when times are bad it can mean many years to command, but imagine many years of always working christmas etc just because you joined two weeks after someone else. Points based means everyone gets a fair crack of the whip.
