Best pay and renumeration in the Sandbox?

Just wondering which of the major carriers are paying the best, I heard a rumour that some Middle East carriers used to have a 1 million dollar bonus on retirement, sounds pretty extreme so I doubt it, but does anyone have current pay grades and long term conditions for the sandbox? cheers D

Thanks for that. Whats the average one would expect (hours) for flight pay/overtime per month.

Cheers

I hadn't realised American Airlines had set up a base in the Middle East?

I wonder why Emirates gets so many applications from the yanks when they should all be applying to AA instead? Bizarre!

AA Pay

The pay for AA is accurate except that it's yesturdays information. In other words, a guy retiring today after a 30 year career could expect 2.5 million. Also, to be a B777 Capt at AA you would need to have a MIN. of 23 years seniority to be a botton reserve Capt. Additional info is that the AA guys are now among the highest paid (amasing because they took about a 30% pay cut 5 years ago) because of the downword US industry. Lastly, the AA pilots retirement is under pressure as the industry continues it's decline. Cheers.

Pretty close Chuck....as of TODAY, I have 23 years with AA and can hold a line of S.America or LHR. The paycut was 23% in 2003. There is no pressure on our retirement until AA goes bankrupt.

Chuck...I'm getting ready to leave (at 52). You can have my seat, just watch your wallet and the a/c logbook. Best of luck.

What a knob!

You might be better off posing your question on the Middle East forum. Better still, a few hours trolling around should give you a heads up. I think you'll find EK to be the most preferred, but I may be being bias!

By the way, it's spelt remuneration.

Sorry to interupt guys, now where were we..........Oh yes, somewhere over Danang............"Watch your six o'clock chuck, Mig 17's coming in low." " Don't worry Larry, Jac's got 'em covered

Let's say you are lucky and only pay 30% tax between Federal and State. Your $17,000 is now down to $11,900. That's less then EK Captains with only half as much seniority as your 23 years. The B Fund would approximately equal the Provident Fund. Your A Fund puts you ahead, no doubt about it. You win the airline lottery, but those at USAirways, UAL, DAL, and many others did not.

Alas, poor Harry the fish. Jealousy can be such an ugly emotion.

We have several AA guys researching the Middle East and occasionally one will go to EK. One of our ex737 Capt's is in training there now. Adjusted for the UAE's inflation , those AED's don't go quite as far as they should, I'm told. I'm sure it's a good company and all, just not the ideal situation for everyone.

I'd like to leave the AA job better than I found it , but that is a little beyond my control. I was hired on the B-scale in 1985 which was originally "half pay, forever" . We (APA) fought some good rounds and won a couple, but got clobbered in 2003. The sorry state of the airline today sickens most employees . Management is raping the company for millions in bonuses each Spring. Maintenance is becoming critically underfunded.
I'm not here to brag about a "shed-load "of money , but it is good for all of us to know there are other opportunites and alternatives.

P.S. Harry....you must learn the difference between knobs and switches.

AA pay vr EK pay

I think your spot on with the pay comparisions. I actually think the EK pay and benifits are much better than AA or any US carrier, particularly after the just anounced pay raise. I ran a detailed spread sheet comparing AA to EK (capt AA 737-800 vr capt EK 777) and found that overall EK was a much better deal on the cash flow side..I think the issue is quality of life. If you have a situation where you can leave and don't mind the sandbox, a situation where you don't need to go out everynight, then you will save a lot of money at EK. But if you hate living out side the US, you commute home every chance you get, you've keep your home in the States and paying a morgage then the cost advantages are mitagated. Again, this is just the money I'm talking about. There are misc. things EK does that really add to the cash flow side of the spread sheet for EK....Also, this is mainly for the Yanks because the others are being killed by the slide of the US dollar..

We agree on something. Jealousy is indeed such an ugly emotion. Please don't assume though that I am guilty of that.

I've lived in the UAE for 8 years now and was fortunate enough to have been one of the first to avail of buying property here.Whilst many sat back and laughed, I continued to buy and sell as prices skyrocketed. During these last few years, my personal wealth has increased significantly, to an extent where a $2 million pension fund I now consider modest. Very modest in fact. My most recent sale netted a profit of twice that sum.

I don't want to turn this into a 'mine's bigger than yours' debate. You've been in this game for some time and as an experienced pilot I respect that. I also realise that the US has had a hard few years and worse could be ahead. Many have been screwed by Incompetent managers in for the short term, while long term staff deal with the consequences of those selfish decisions. The US is not unique. No wonder loyalty is hard to come by these days. When we see our hard earned pensions reduced to nothing and the Airline decimated through lack of investment in its staff, is it any wonder?

I've read some of your previous posts and realise you're an old school union guy who shares these same views. I saw the writing on the wall many years ago which is why I had to look elsewhere for my pension. Luckily I found it in property and was in the right place at the right time. I simply could not rely on EK. Our own provident fund is woefully poor unlike the excellent pension that you can look forward to. However, Emirates does offer industry leading job security (providing you don't screw up) and a good overall package with modern aircraft and great destinations. Oh yes............and 14 weeks profit share this year! That's probably why, as I said earlier, that many guys from the States are applying here. It's probably the best of a bad bunch I guess.

Enjoy the retirement 'old man'. Don't waste it all on Pprune!

Harry....
I'm glad to hear you are doing well over there. Most of us knew all along that flying airplanes would not make us wealthy. Sounds like you've got a good plan in place. Real estate has been a good way to go as long as you aren't holding too much of it when the economic music stops...as you are well aware, I'm sure. People used to scoff at the idea of selling water in a bottle , now folks are making good coin buying and selling sand. Good on ya!

Yes, I am an old school unionist. I'll continue the fight until my last day here, but honestly, I won't miss that part of it. The guy I'm going to fly for (I'm told) is benevolent to a fault. Gee,what will it be like to work for somebody like THAT? I hadn't entertained the thought of flying anything smaller for eons , but hey, things change. The French are making some cool bizjets these days.
