Changing jobs with a current Instrument Rating

In order to change jobs and change type, i.e. doing a new type rating, you need a current IR (or whatever they call it today). But say your IR runs out a few weeks before you leave. Your existing employer is reluctant to spend money on sim time and the examiner. They may judge it worthwhile giving you gardening leave for those last few weeks.
Of course you can't go without the IR rating............so you have to stay.
Anybody got into this situation?

Hi Max performance

If you a have a previous type rating on your licence, you do not need to renew your instrument rating as the new type rating will give you a new instrument rating.

I think there has been a previous thread on PPRuNe about this..

CAA guidelines also state this.. I think in section 17/18..

Hope this helps...

Can't say that it has ever mattered. Why can't you go without the IR or, at the least, what does it matter if it expires shortly after your departure?
Any new operator has always wanted to do a base check/IR anyway prior to line training. This is absolutely the case, surely, in the situation where a new type rating is called for?
The problem arises perhaps when you want to leave one operator without going immediately to another. Then your IR might expire and you might face an interview without being current. That can put a somewhat different complexion on the thing. But on the whole, since any new operator is going to require you to be checked out, don't think it makes a lot of difference.

Max - I think you've got your wires a little crossed.

One of the LASORS criteria states that :

The requirement to have/hold a current and valid multi-engine Instrument Rating (Aeroplanes) is only a requirement for an initial MPA type rating and not subsequent type ratings.

If you already possess a Multi-Pilot Aeroplane (MPA) rating then there is no requirement for your IR to be valid when changing jobs. If you move to a different job and different aircraft type you will do a full type rating course that necessarily includes an IR.

You may have been confused by what has been said in the bmi thread by those currently in the holding pool, but this is only an issue for those straight out of training who do not hold an MPA of any sort.
