What's it like working for Ryanair?

So I am thinking of different career options and while this one is not high on the list, it is intriguing in some ways. I have a former LX buddy who is with Ryanair in Bergamo. He seems to like it quite a bit because he is at home in Lugano a lot.

I no longer live in Europe (but used to for quite a while), and think the idea of being at home every day is kind of intriguing.

How many sectors per day do you guys fly? How is the pay? How is it working there for Ryanair? How is the management?

I know that for every good story there are bad ones. But some people genuinely like what they do even if it's not the most prestigious job, whatever that means.

Just curious about how it really is. Thanks!

Good question. Has anyone ever, given an option, chosen FR?

Hmmmn - depends what you want.

If you're looking for professional challenges, a nice company to work for and a brilliant working environment - look elswhere.

If you want an easy job with a fixed roster, home every night, no-brain flying that you can just show up for, do and go back home again - then you're on.

Generally, the small bases are the nicest, so if you don't fancy deadheading all over EUR, go for the based Brookfield contract that will give you 5-4. The non-based contract gives you 5-5, but as I said; you'll get a whistlestop tour of the countryside.

Capt. in general take home 3,1K GBP/month (after tax) + non-taxable per diems of 1,7K GBP/month. If you head to the €-zone, they'll fob you off with the same numbers - in €

Looking at where aviation is headed over the next 12 months - I think you might find better T&Cs elsewhere. As there is no union, RYR can impose their T&Cs at will, and nothing you can do about it, so the next 3 years aren't gonna be pretty. Expect to take a cut of anywhere up to 20-30% from the above figures.

My advice - head to India or Japan. Better environment & more stability - even though it's contract work. A 4-year contract should see you through the looming storm....eeerrrh...I think?

Brgds,
Empty

Edited to say yes, I had the choice and went there. Have had spates of regret, but on the whole still happy.

Lugano your friend and you left LX because of the management which some of the Swiss PPRuNERS hate. (Pay is another issue, but where isn't it?) Times that by 5 and your get FR. Stay in GRR, its better for you there my friend.

Yeah, the management at LX was bad but that's not why I left. I left because I had to leave, along with about 600 other former LXers. I would probably still be there (and still whining!!! ) if I had not been forced out.

Anyway, I am not really serious about Ryanair, but I am intrigued by the thought of being at home every night and flying around Europe again, which I enjoyed more than the crap on the east coast of the US.

I don't doubt that you are right about the cheap management. That problem seems to be universal though!

Seriously, do yourself a massive favour and avoid FR like the plague! It will save you a lot of stress in the long run.

I suppose I should really qualify my statement, this being a public forum and all. The main reasons to join are stable roster, home every night etc etc.

The reasons for not joining are plentiful, let's start with having no union representation, this in turn means that FR can and will change your T&C's at a drop of a hat and there's nothing anyone can do to stop them. T&C's will continue downward pretty quickly now that FR seem sure that next year will be a blood bath (they seem to think every year will be similar), and they have just managed to get a new pay deal through at their biggest base STN (with a majority of 50.05% apparently, although no numbers are given to back that up by the company!). It's essentially a case of 'same ****, different day' which can be incredibly tiring after a very short time.

Then there are the other things like the annual leave system, this involves having to request all your leave for the year in one go at the beginning of the year. You pick 2 2 week allocations and 1 1 week allocation, three sets of dates for each which cannot overlap (about six months worth of time) and the company then allocate your leave, which once done is nigh on impossible to change. Confusing? You bet!

Then there are the changes they randonly make to you T&C's throughout the year, like changing our stby's from 8 hours to 12 hours, with no notice our discussion. I could go on but you get the idea.

Moral has just gone through the floor and everyone is pretty pissed off with their lot really. You can get your own back in small ways though. I won't go into details except to say I don't know the meaning of fuel economy!!

The best thing to do is search for FR related posts on this forum, there are plenty of them to keep you busy! This is probably the most talked about airline on pprune, and not for any good reasons!

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from an extremely unhappy FR camper!!

Based in Bergamo, living in Lugano and home every night?
Well well....my navigation system says it's 120km/1hour20mins but it doesn't know you have to drive around Milan on the infamous "tangenziale" (the big ring road around the city) and the A4 (the busiest chunk of italian highway).
That can pretty easily and unexpectedly become a nighmare trip....especially if you have to do it before and after a 4 legs duty day.
