Agencies

I have mentioned this on the Korean thread.

Seems the all the agencies hiring pilots these days are not out for the pilots best interests.

I know all the unions or associations of the world get together at some point during the year. We know there are many pilots that support these unions throughout their careers and are retiring.

Some of these pilots come from majors, British Airways, Delta, American, etc. There may be a small amount that would like to work past retirement.

My question is: Why can't these union/associations get together and form some sort of Agency? Each union will ask their respective pilots who would like to work past retirement and find them the best deal possible without taking them to the cleaners. There will have to be fees paid but $1000 USD/month for 5 years from each and every pilot is a bit much.

This Agency will be open to other pilots of the world with proper rating or non rated pilots. If all or most of the pilots went through one agency (that looked out for your interests) there may be better deals out there.

How do we know if the agency is getting paid $18,000 USD and only offering $10,000 to the pilots of a 747-400?

Or am I living a pipe dream?

Pipe dream.

You would be lucky to get pilots to agree on the time of day, never mind what you propose.

The future...???

Maple Leafs...
xxx
Retiring 13 months from now and happy to. If I was 25 years old again, I would never become a pilot again, instead, I would learn to fly to learn the vocabulary of aviation, then quit the flying, and be president and general manager of a pilot agency.
xxx
I would enroll pilot wannabees (for a fee, obviously) who are ready to fly the RH seat of a A-380 for a salary of US$4,000/mo, and offer them to Patagonia Air Express or Gulag International Airlines for US$10,000 per month... and base them in Ouagadougou, in a cheap hotel, lobby full of ladies-of-the-night to carry their flight cases after 24 hrs on flight duty.
xxx
Working for an agency (not the airline), they are not entitled to any benefits, or right to "industrial actions" to say how the Brits call the "pilot strikes" for higher salaries and better rosters, medical insurances or retirement benefits. No unions are active with agencies... And when their fATPL has thawed, fire them to hire new wannabees...
xxx
And... if I offer US$4,000/mo salary for a F/O A-380, there will be another wannabee (who paid for his licences and type ratings) who will prostitute himself to me to do the job for US$3,000...
xxx
What will be the next 20 or 30 years for airlines is no longer my concern. Having my modest retirement, and a little bungalow on the beach in Brasil, I dont care if American, United, British and Alitalia are to be bankrupt, replaced by the low cost carriers. I have my old peugeot 205 to travel around, I dont need to pay for beer and peanuts served by so called "cabin attendants" who bark their welcome greetings to passengers, and learned their trade under Stalin's regime.

There are some advantages when working as a contractor for a foreign air carrier through an offshore crew leasing agency:

1- Huge income tax breaks

2- Written "contract" includes exact job specifications about: pay, overtime, duty hours, duty travel, deadhead travel, 4-star hotel accommodations, days off, vacation, accident/health insurance. . . etc. Everything is in Black & White. There's room for some individual "give & take" at mutually agreed upon terms between contactor, agency and client.

So, as a contractor one lives by the contract. The pay is on time and there are no fleabag hotels ever, because the wheels would immediately stop turning.

Among the many tasks of a union is to ensure all flying is done in house; credibilty would be at stake if one tried to win both sides of the argument. You can't tell people to get to the back of an 8000 pilots line and then go to Asia and ask for 777 command. Back to reality, be careful about the agent and the ethical and cultural values of the people you do business with. What may likely be regarded as dishonest and fraudulent in the west, may be seen as clever and innovative somewhere else; that will have a serious impact on your salary, overtime, insurance claims, accommodations etc.
