National Insurance Number

I have to apply for a national insurance number. I thought I would be able to use a temporary national insurance number for a couplf of weeks but obviously this is not the case as a friend of mine said I cannot be employed under such terms.

Apparently you need a permanent address in the UK in order to apply for the number. I haven't got a permanent address and will not have enough time to get one either (at least not the utility bill).

The HMRC did say if my employer could request an application form on my behalf from them, it wouldn't be required with the permanent address. But, the persons I have spoken to have made it pretty clear the company won't do it.

What should I do? Am I allowed to work on a temporary national insurance number until I am in the UK when I would be able to sort everything out?

Work Permit too!

If you don't have a NI number then I guess you have come from outside the UK. You will also need a work permit to be legally employed in the UK, do you have that? If you are a foreigner then you need the work permit to get the NI number. The NI number is a must so you can be properly taxed and pay national insurance. HMRC are currently tightening all these procedures up. We fully expect some of our southern hemisphere colleagues where I work to be confronted by this reality soon.

Luckily I do have a work permit as I am from another country in Europe which gives me the right to live and work in the UK. It appears that they are tightening the regulations even further. Is it impossible to get a national insurance number without a permanent address?

Why should you get a NI number without a permanant address in the UK?

We've heard your story a million times before and unless you are prepared to abide by UK law, leave and go home.

@ The Letter

You can work without an NI number for at least a couple of months. It will mean that you are taxed at a basic rate of around 25% without any tax free allowances. Depending on your gross income it probably means you'll overpay tax for the first few months but as soon as your NI number is sorted you can write the tax office connected to your company a letter which will result in a nice big cheque coming your way. Obviously if you earn more then a certain amount you'll be underpaying and owe them something, cut off is around 35000 I believe.

I used the company head office address of my previous employer to set up a bank account etc, as long as its an address the bank is happy. They just have to tick boxes and don't really care as long as the boxes are ticked, well so it seems anyway.

@ Bleeds off:

No, as long as you have an EU passport you can live and work anywhere in Europe without a workpermit etc.

I applied for my NI number through my UK employer when I first joined. The company used their address. Took about one month, no hassle.

@ niknak

What a pointless and unnecessary post - the letter is asking for information.

niknak,

Because I will be working for a British company! I am not trying to oppose any UK laws.

PGA,

Is it actually accepted to work with a temporary NI-number? According to HMRC they no longer accept temporary national insurance numbers. But, it would put me at ease if I would be able to work on a temporary one as I could sort everything out once in the UK. It's a lot easier than trying to sort everything out here.

speedrestriction,

That is also my hope but I never seem to get to speak to the right people in the company. Apparently it's a simple procedure if the company would apply on your behalf

Re-Heat,

Thank you

@ The Letter:

I don't know if the law has changed or not but if it has they seem to have made it even more difficult, long winded and time consuming then it already was.......

But then again, that is something you'll have to get used to moving to the UK
