FSI Farnbourough Sim Instructor

Anyone have any words of wisdom with regards on how to impress the bods down at Flight Safety in Farnborough? Second interview is looming for position of Sim Instructor and so any background knowledge on the interview process (all dayer) or any info that might help me would be much appreciated!

There must be someone out there with some info or someone else going for the interview!!??

Read this. It's highly unlikely that any of the inhabitants of Wannabes are in a position to be looking at a job as a sim instructor, given that extensive prior experience of commercial or military aviation is generally required of applicants. That would tend to explain why no-one in the Wannabes forums was able to advise you. I have one piece of advice - check the 'mission statement' of the forum you post your query in; it helps to avoid wasted effort!

When you arrive you will be invited for an interview with 3 people - I had Jim Lonas (Director of Training) - Paul Hewett (Assistant Centre Manager) & Tracy Clough (Customer Support / HR Manager) ............ They hand over their cards - so have some you can give them. Basic interview - Nothing special. What is RVSM, What do you think about CRM, What would you do if a student didn’t like the Sop’s you were teaching, what do you believe is important when it comes to training etc etc

Next you are taken up stairs to a class room and given a manual of an aircraft type that you are not familiar with (I got the HS125-800XP) and told to read and prepare a 30 minute lecture on a subject you are given (I got the Hydraulic system). They give you 40 minutes to do this.

The time goes by very quickly and before you know what is happening the room will be filling with people and you are invited to start the lecture. The people filling the room all look like instructor types who know the A/C inside out, quite daunting to feel confidant with ones basic grasp of the system that you are about to give a lecture on!

Tip - I made the mistake of trying to fully understand the system and didn’t leave enough time to prepare any diagrams. With hindsight give your self twenty five minutes to understand the system and fifteen minutes to prepare the lecture notes, drawings etc. I believe that they would rather hear “confidant nonsense” that “ill prepared accuracy”. Some could say it is a short term memory test, others could say that presentation is 90% of the battle; I will go with the latter. The audience will be marking you through out the lecture on score cards.

After a five minute break you will be invited to give a prepared lecture of your choice - again they will mark you on presentation, content, style etc.

At the end of the lectures you are shown out without any indication of how you have done. The scores will be added later and an email sent by the end of the week letting you know your fate.

Thanks so much for the info chopper, sounds all a bit daunting especially the 30 minute lecture bit. Ho hum
You didn't mention anything about the sim session, does that mean you didn't do it?

Hi Blu2

I did'nt have a sim session - They explained that that would be part of the interview in the future. If you have an interview soon, you may also avoid a sim session.

The client...the student in other words...has to accept the training his company has requested. FSI adhears to a rigid code of standards so your answer should be I would train him per the curriculam (oops splling?) and request he voice his concerns via critique. As to the lectures. KISS. Make them discussions not lectures. They want to know you can communicate. Involve them all in questions. Look them in the eye. Move away from the podium but dont pace. Take all change out of your pockets.(So you don't nervously jingle it!!) Finally if anyone in the room starts talking or disrupting, it's probably a challenge to see if you can firmly take charge and keep the discussion on track.
