Emirates or Ryanair

Hi there.

Need some advices:

F/O, 38 years old, married, 1 child, 5000 hrs tot (all jet time), MD80 driver and now ... without a job.

My goal is to have a more "stable" lifestyle and future ( ... if you can get it in this business!) and hopefully to seat on the left side in 5 years (+/-).

Not very happy at this moment!

If successful at both interviews that are coming up soon, wich of the two?
I hear lots of bad news from both sides of the fences!

just told that we are not to reference specific corporate identities but i fly for the one and would strongly suggest the airline whose country has lots of oil and sand.

Mate, if you have a job offer from Emirates, TAKE IT.

Of course any job satisfaction depends on the individual. Some person may be happy flying as a bush pilot single pilot VFR/IFR.

Sure, you'll hear the good and bad about any job or airline.
You want a worldwide airline career and a stable job with the airline perks?, then you need a full service airline. For example Ryanair won't give you houseing allowance and education allowance for your child and a decent basic salary. The'll be FR pilots here that will tell you exactly what Ryanair will give you but that's another story

Sorry to throw water on your fire,but unless your desperate,take Ryannair.
EK is stable,but be prepered,for changing rules constantly.awful rostering,permanenet fatigue,and weak management.

I understand Ryannair is not all great,but its real money in a real world.EK was excellent,but read the threads,to get a balanced view.

How long have you been waiting for assesment with emirates, when did you submit your intial online application?

PH, submitted EK's application Jan 2004.

QB, yes lots of bad rumors in dxb but ... right now I'm not working ... just think that I had to share the cost of a sim with abuddy to renew my IR and type ratings ...

Ryanair: I have to put up in cash over 30,000€ before starting the conversion course.
Good cash, but no benefits (license insurance, medical, kid's school ...)
Command upgrade in maybe 3-4 years.
Good a/c, glass cockpit for the long term.

Emirates: medium pay, lots of benefits (house + bills, medical, school ...)
no advance cash for training, just a bond.
Command upgrade maybe 5-6 years.
New a/c (330/340 o 777) bad recently also 310 pax/cargo ... (bad?!?!).
bad ... long haul ... away from home (EU) and from family (in dxb).

Give me your inputs ...

I fly for the more northern of the 2.

Quite a few guys have gone to the sand and there are a few on the way. You have to look carefuly into Ryanair before making a decision. We have modern new aircraft, and good pay (at the moment, but every new joiner is on a different contract!). With 5000 hours promotion would probably be in the region of a year to 18 months.

You will be made to pay £50 for your CV! And I think in the region of £150 for interview and sim! You will be made to pay for your type rating!! In the region of E24,000 I think.Its alot of money to kick off with and you probably wont even be on a full contract but be a contractor. The rostering is very good the contractors get 5 on 5 off, and you can work out months in advance when your off which with a family is fantastic. Full time you work 5 on 3 off and is excellent also. You will fly 900 hours April to April

You will pay for absolutely EVERYTHING in FR from uniform, to your medicals (and have to do them on your own time) and HOTAC when in the Sim, No BULPA, No Loss of Licence (stops in a few months) The pension is a Stakeholder plan now, so no company input for new joiners.You will have to take your own Tea Coffee Water and Food with you. When I say you get nothing you do get that absolutely NOTHING.

The things it does have going for it are money and a stable roster.

As a single guy I think its a no brainer, go to the beach! However as a married guy its a different picture and comes down to your family. If your family are happy with Dubai and spending time without you there then Id go there. If they want to be in the UK then FR.

That said with 5000 hours and looking at the two Em sounds great, I would look for a better company in the UK though. There are far better about, SLIGHTY less money but who treat you as a human rather than a number. When I say slighty if you factor in the perks and the fact that you generaly fly less with other companies its probably comparable.

It is interesting to note that I know of at least one ex Ryanair Captain who came to EK and has already left to rejoin Ryanair, so as ifleeplanes says, it is a close call and warrants careful evaluation.

How many guys do you think leave Emirates to go to Ryanair? And the other way around?

I'd go to the sandpit unless you particularly want to stay in Europe.

FR when on contract can U ask for a preferred base? and when full time will they give your preferred base?
time for upgrade: 18 months, is that realistic?

Don't work for Pikies! MOL would charge you for the air you breathe in his planes if he could. My experience of DXB is that the locals are some of the nicest people you could meet but you must make an effort to fit in. However, your effort will be rewarded.
