Dan, I don't have the numbers to hand, but I understand that most of those who left under redundancy or unpaid leave subsequently returned (many of those scheduled for redundancy never left). There are a significant minority that didn't, I know, but I believe that most did.

Could someone post a couple of trip lines?
Say, 4 weeks on the A340 and ditto on the B747-400.
Also, what is the roster notice?

Yarpy you'd need about six months worth of rosters to get a reasonable idea of how they pan out, as you're only looking at four or five trips a month. As has been pointed out earlier in the thread, currently the 744 guys do slightly more trips as their destinations are predominantly shorter range than the Airbus's, and have fewer nights away on individual trips. Both fleets operate to the same 750 hours annually.

But you might recall I suggested somewhere else that the company wasn't willing to introduce 2 new types at the same time; with the 380 put back 18 months, that gives a bit of a window that they could squeeze in another type introduction....

First 5 aircraft 2006. Recruitment on the 400 in 2005 to have bodies ready for the arrival of above said aircraft. Eventually all 400s to LGW. Total number ?. Some 340-300s to be retired but net overall increase of total aircraft. Deal to be ratified by end of June so it could all change!

I would think that the Manchester base (it already exists for CC) will go to the 744 within the next year or so. It was proposed to add MAN-BGI from the beginning of this year's schedule, but that was postponed. When it will start, I don't know, but I'd guess it won't be too long. I reckon the company would let that shake down for a year or more before any further routes were added. The Manchester market has been very seasonal, which doesn't really fit the company's operation, so I think they'll need hard evidence that Northerners will holiday out of season (and will pay Virgin prices) before they commit big time!
It took long enough for Virgin to be persuaded that there was a business market out of Gatwick, and, immediately after 9/11, Virgin's business traffic retreated to Heathrow (for obvious and good reasons). The suits are not entirely convinced that there are not dragons outside the M25, so they will take their time!

Scroggs, you're an absolute gem! I've read all the threads and associated links you've provided to try to get ready for my interview (next week - wish me luck!!) and as I don't know any mates within VS, the effort you have put in is hugely appreciated. Nope, VS200/201 is the current LHR-HKG schedule. SYD will just be an extension to that service however I think that once the load factors pick up then the service will have another flight added just doing the LHR-HKG. So it would become LHR-HGK x2 and HKG-SYD once...

The intention is for the LHR-HKG-SYD eventually to become an A380 schedule. It will start on the A346. While it's possible that a second LHR-HKG is on the cards, it's not being proposed at the moment as far as I am aware.
This route has been planned for some considerable time, and the airframe and personnel planning have anticipated its introduction - it is the primary driver of Virgin's current recruiting programme and the recently-increased A346 order. However, there are more new routes on the cards and Virgin has gone on record recently to say that it intends to be twice its current size within 10 years, via a planned growth of approximately 10% per annum.
