B744/8 manual takeoff thrust setting (GE)
With autothrottle inop, does anyone have a detailed procedure of how to accomplish setting takeoff thrust for the B744/-8?
I assumed it was just:
PF spools all 4 evenly to 70/45% depending on variant
PF advances thrust to approximate calculated N1 and states “set takeoff thrust”
PM adjust thrust to within ~1% of target by 80 knots.
If FO is PM, they adjust thrust from lower part of thrust levers while CA/PF keeps hands on top in case of reject.
Apparently some pilots interpret the Boeing FCOM to mean that only the PM can advance the thrust past 45/70% and that the PF isn’t supposed to set them close to target takeoff N1 on their own.

Thanks, that doesn't really address the scenario of autothrottles inoperative though other than saying to smoothly advance them; the issue at hand is who does that and how. I am tempted to say it doesn't matter but I'm being forced to address the issue.

My employer when A/T is inop:
- CA PF, CA sets thrust within couple %, calls SET THRUST, PM fine tunes calls THRUST SET
- CA PM, CA sets thrust within couple % then fine tunes calls THRUST SET
