Definition of a clearway

Is there a definition of the dimensions of clearway ? In particular the relationship between its width and the distance from the end of the runway/stopway ? Presumably its width must be >= to that of the runway ? May it remain that same width along its whole length ?

Thanks!

At the risk of providing a slightly more helpful answer, Annex 14 recommends that a clearway should start at the end of the TORA, its length should not exceed half the TORA and it should have a width of at least 150 m.

Those are, of course, SARPS and don't include the word "must".

“CLEARWAY

Clearway is the area beyond the runway not less than 152m wide centrally located about the extended centerline of the runway and under the control of airport authorities. Clearway is expressed as a plane extending from the end of runway with up slop [sic] not exceeding 1.25% above which no object or terrain protrudes with exception of threshold lights.”

That took about 20 seconds. Maybe it would take longer to find a definition without the error. Over here we would say it’s 500 feet wide - FAR 1.1.

Thanks!

I somehow had an idea that there was a requirement for the width to increase as a function of distance from the end of the runway. Obviously that was my imagination.

150m wide and length <= 0.5 x TORA looks like it.

You probably are thinking of the obstacle splays for clearance calculations after takeoff.

Your risk paid off David. Good info about Annex 14.

@sonicBUM; Isn't it so annoying when you post a query and the first reply is from some clever-dick to say something like "Google is your friend" etc, etc? It's the assumption of idiocy that's insulting to the OP and the rest of us - who, after all, are here on a specialist Web Forum, on a specialist Thread asking a rather involved question. I'd say that makes it a given we know how to use Google.

p.s: I've just noticed you post your age as 100. If that is the case then I apologise for dis-respecting my elders. You must have seen much. If it is not, then...
