Can a user of this equipment help me to isolate the annoying terrain warnings where the terrain is not properly mapped? The book says the FLTA and PDA features can be inhibited, but it does not say how.

Garmin issued a bulletin on that several months ago. It may still be in their website.
In any case they have very recently issued new worldwide and airport area terrain databases, which correct any such problems.
