Slat aerodynamics on T/O, 737

Hey guys!

I tried a posting like this some time ago when trying to figure out the Short Field Performance kit for the 737, but I'll go by this a different way today.

How come only partially extended slats and higher T/O flaps settings on departure give a higher possible payload?

Any reflections?

Cheers
