MD80 cabin altitude & press controller

HOw does the MD controller know when the A/C is returning to the dep.field and not landing in the dest field??

On the '73, it was you had not reached the cruising level set on the press contoller

It's part of the descent checklist.......or non-normal / single engine approach checklist if you needed to divert after TO.
