With the brief description that you've given, I would think that it refers to a qualified pilot, who, in addition to his/her normal piloting requirements, also has qualifications and/or responsibilities in the "Technical" area, e.g. Performance Engineering.

There's quite a few of us who fall into that bracket on these pages, in a considerable number of areas.

That's my best guess

Some more infos

Hi folks,
It looks my question was a bit strange ! Let me give you a short explaination. I work for a charter company, expanding, and I have been given the oportunity to take/create this position which did not exist before ! So before giving my answer, I need to know what I am going to take on my shoulder, I do not want to fall in a trap and would like the tasks to be clear from the bigining. To me, this job is something like being the point of contact between pilots and manufacturer !

Is that better now ?

Regards,

I have met a number of people who have the title "Technical Pilot" adn the essence of their role was to be the font of all (technical) knowledge for the fleet they were resonsible for (eg 737 Technical Pilot). They liaised with manufacturers, the regulator and other suppliers of relevant operational information to keep the line drivers up to date with the aircraft they were flying.

I hope this helps.

Cheers
TH

a description of the duties of a technical pilot should be found in the company operations manuals, usually based on jar format and if you need to ask these questions on this forum, then perhaps you should consider doing training!

A "Technical Pilot" is one who has the flying skills and experience of a Captain, and the technical knowledge of a Professional Flight Engineer.

And let me add, these people are very few and far between, though most might think they are, they are disappointingly mistaken!!

Cheers, FD

Post Getting Technical

From an AIRLINE perspective, Trash Hauler and Flight Detent's definitions are both on the money. At Brand X (manufacturer) flight test dept, one typically interface with an airline's technical pilots when working with them on modifcations, updates and new airplane development. Frequently they fly the customer demo flights and pick up new airplanes.

Some airlines are big enough that they have their own technical groups and occasionally an airplane pulled out of line ops for extended in-company test programs (i.e. American used a 727 and 757 for extensive CPDLC development).

From a manufacturing perspective, Technical Pilots (seperate from Test Pilots) are the company pilots who interface with the airlines to develop operating procedures and write the operating manuals. Often these people are former airline pilots. They may participate in test and training flights from time to time.

One of the tasks of the technical pilot is,in our comp, to make sure that all required instruments ore systems are installed ,functional and fully understood by the pilots ( for ex monitor the introduction of TCAS ,or 8.33khz radios, or any 'will be' mandatory systems)
Also ,maintain connection between flying and technical department, and inform eachother department about the neeeds of the other one.
Assist the flight safety dep. also, with regard to technical aspects.
We have a technical pilot for every fleet. It is not a test pilot,it doesn't do the certification flights.
This is a new position, required by the JAA regulations ,I guess.

Agree with alexban, we have too.
The tech pilot duty is also to interface among flight ops and engineering in order to customize company MEL starting from MMEL and considering local CAA rules.
