LHR/AMS/FRA-JNB Route Info
Would appreciate if someone knew of a site or reference for flights from Europe to JNB. Specifically, enroute alternates, and other info.
I do have the LH pilots print out, but looking for anything more detailed.

Hi Phil,
No site link, but on a previous outfit I worked for the following places were aproved for IALTN routing from mid europe down to J'bourg:
Alger, Tunis, Tamanrasset (DAAT), Niamey, Kano (albeit for emergency only), N'Djanema, Khartoum, Brazzaville, Lusaka, Harare and Bujumbura.

Which airline does LHR, AMS and FRA?
As your request is for unidirectional routes Podea-Auntie Podea you should start with:
http://cram.ecacnav.com and of course it is free. How to get out of Europe without stuffing up.
Europe, and not least Iberia/France love their unis and for high quality ERCs try the RAF... they sell to individuals and even on a one-off basis at far less than Jepps. I find paper much easier when checking CDRs and UNIs for directionality and use a simple home-made spreadsheet to predict lat/long on idealised GC routes to narrow things down. You'll find the RAF on the following address, very cheap, very good

If you simply must have electronic ERCs and have 'em free try

Assuming that you are a Podean try

Once you are in francophone North Africa you need

Back to basics, remember that the route EGLL-FAJS is not the route FAJS-EGLL, there are jiggles and joggles and you won't have that much of a choice anyway.
If it is an intvu Africa can be rat**** until merry old HBV hoves in sight. FACT very much better, eh Jannie?

Sincere thanks for your comprehensive answers - I've spent several most enjoyable hours going back and forth and (dare I say) navigating through your suggestions. I have an interest in some of these Dark Continent places through the dubious privilege of having to do some of the planning for them. The nice bit of aviation in that part of the world, as you and Salzinger_FOO and Dbate have illustrated, is the “flying over the top”. The less nice bit is being down on the ground wondering how 30 year broken concrete can be made smooth again before mosquitos bite the roller driver to bits or the site engineer gets arrested for inadequate supplementary under counter payments. Thank goodness someone invented young engineers to do the work so old ones can sit back in comfort, surf the ‘net, and complain about Dark Continent airports . . . . .

Still working on JNB. memory you see! Whereas it is fairly easy EGLL-FACT (and close to a GC route) it is surprisingly not quite so simple to Jo'burg. (Even more so when Angola was troublesome with some routes still struck out in 2000 but available in 2003). When I get some time soon and Mrs E lets me I'm going to look at this again if only to relive the joys of the France-Algeria section. I still hold to my view that without cram@ecacnav any start to the exercise is fraught.
As our colleague OverRun has noted, there are aspects to the continent but hailing from an equatorial island not a million miles away and serving time with an amazing airline I can say what I think I'spose. Which is Gawd Bless Aussie.
