Engine noise or the lack of it...
When converting from 737-300 to -800 one of the more notable differences to me was the lack of engine-noise (on the aproach that is, not in cruise!!!) on the -800 flightdeck. On the -300 (-700 as well by the way) one can almost keep the correct speed by listening. Personally I find that a certain amount of engine-sound gives excellent feedback about powersettings without having to look at N1 every time.
As I can imagine that on 777's and alike the engines can't be heard at all, would some sort of computer-generated engine sound on the flightdeck be helpful. Or maybe it already exists <img src="confused.gif" border="0">
Any thoughts???

What I meant was of course only for approach and landing. During cruise I'd prefer computer-generated sounds of birds, palmtrees and the sea <img src="tongue.gif" border="0"> <img src="tongue.gif" border="0">

Best learn to look at them gauges instead. And be happy with less noise. One of the main reasons that nobody can drag me out of my old steam airplane (MD80)in favour of a Boeing <img src="tongue.gif" border="0">

Engine noise??. .i tend to keep my airspeed indicator in the forefront of my scan on approach and landing.. .You can trade airspeed for altitude and vice versa, but you can't trade engine noise for chicken sqaut. What good is engine noise?, your power settings will vary every day due to many various factors.. .. .May I suggest an aspirin??
Track I know what you mean. I have the same problem on the B733 when the rain is pissing down and you're trying to land the ******. You can't hear anything but a constant roar as the rain drops pound the windscreen at 250km/h.. .. .Using the sound of the jet engines on final is alot like using the sound of a car engine when driving. Especially one with manual transmission. I just seem to have a much better connection with the machine when I can hear the note (musical note that is). It's hard to explain really.. .. .Of course you can still fly the plane. It's just that you are deprived of one of the many cues you use to get the job done. You don't even realise you use it until it's missing.. .. .I didn't know ****** was considered a rude word.
