Cool

Oakley's have to be it.

Who cares what you can see, as long as you COOL!

And for those who get a sore head from wearing sunglasses. Easy solution. Get on a aeroplane that is quite enough not to have to wear a headset.

Speaking of headsets. The best I have every used in Bose. You pay for what you get.....

I recently purchased a pair of Bolle Renegade sunnies. These allow me to have my script lens, and 4 different interchangeable wrap round lenses, for different conditions. You can get polarised lenes if you want them. The price all up – don’t ask. Private medical picked up most of it and I still paid about $200.00 – worth it YES.

As someone has already said – you get what you pay for

Capt. vegi,
good call. No I did not get the Sunnies from one of Les's "earns".
For all confused Les Norton is in books by Robert G Barret. A great light read. Start at the first one in the series if interested.

Bingin,

I resent you using the correct spelling of my user ID as a signature. You managed to confuse me. (I realise that this is easy, but very disconcerting to self.)

The best pair of Sunnies I ever bought cost me $10 at a resort shop on Hamilton Island. Great for boats, planes, trains and automobiles. Unfortunately, the frames broke and I am now using a $5 pair from the markets. Not quite as good, but they fit and both were of the wrap-around style.

I am shocked that no one has mentioned the Percel "Aviator" sun glasses. They were designed for the Italian Air Force about the same tome as the Ray Ban were, and are MUCH better. I have been wearing them for 15 years and would not wear any other brand.... About $A300, and can be hard to get.

pseudonymn,
No offence planned, correct spelling or not, just a play on the whole idea of a "user name" being one.

What about "Blue Blocker" sunnies. The ad on TV used to win me over from my Serengeti's every time! If only I could afford such a fine product(reflected in the "big budget" ad's) and wear them with the same style as the models.

Throttlemonkey I had heard that about the bar, however after checking ersa (and relying on an alcohol enhanced memory) it's still a 'rr'.
You're dead right about DLS though, she's a pearler!

I have this really great supplier in New York that sells me Ray Bans out of a suitcase - I buy a pair off him when I'm there every couple of years, and when I can find his latest street address. After a while the painted logo wears off which really improves peripheral vision. Now how do I improve the resolution on this computer monitor?

When Ray-Ban stopped making Ambermatics (photochromatic from dark yellow - amber to brown [warm] or gray [cold]) I had to chose another brand. Tried alternative Ray-Bans, Bolle, Oakley then settled on Serengeti Nantuckets.

While they're great for being out or looking out on a sunny day, they're no good when flitting through the shadows or looking back inside at a shaded dashboard (esp. EFIS) since they are intrinsicly dark lenses. My Ambermatics cut glare (no squinting), improved contrast (smoke/haze) yet allowed easy reading of instruments (including all EFIS colours) and quickly adjusted to shadows or IMC.

Someone mentioned Aviator style not wrapping around or fitting in a helmet - well, I can't abide glasses that you can see around the corners of or let sunshine in around the top or bottom edges and I've never noticed this happening with my 59mm Ray-Ban Aviators. Also appropriately sized Aviators do fit easily in a motorcycle helmet and Top Gun suggests the same inside USAF helmets Seeing people wearing sunnies that let more sunlight pour in from above and either side, than through the front, puzzles me but I guess they look good in the mirror. Unfortunately for me Ray-Ban decided to trim their expensive professional product lines in favour of the more fashionable models (cheap to make - expensive to buy), so expensive-to-make Ambermatic and the related Chromax lenses were dropped.

Back to the frames - peripheral vision is important and many plastic frames intrude. That's another gripe I have with my Serengetis - take them off or put wire frames (Aviators) on and the world goes wide-screen. Other posters have mentioned the pain of a headset squashing the arms into their head. Wire frames are less likely to be felt at all.

BTW - the bendy hooked ear bit is called a cable arm in Ray-Ban-speak These keep your sunnies on no matter which way up a P-51 driver might find him or herself.

Another thing about them - cable arms need two hands to put on. Most military (square) style glasses (Ray-Ban and Randolf) also have straight flat arms making them a one handed job to put on even with a headset in the way - and being wire and with a flat 'paddle', they should be relatively comfortable under a headset.

Further, wire frames are usually more compact when folded and can slip in a shirt pocket, while your typical full-wrap Oakley Eyejackets, Killer Loops and 'Alien' styles need a semi-circular case and cargo pants even when folded.

We're all going to prefer something others can't abide, but if it wasn't for fashion, pilots in particular might have a few more cheaper choices.

Being a sensitive type with sensitive eyes have always needed good glasses. tried the cheap ones from the service stations but they never lasted very long. Brought a set of Ray bans on the way to PNG ( Glary place that with lots of big white glary clouds ) but they were not dark enough. got a set of serengety drivers (graduated and photocromatic) and never looked back. We were too busy to be putting Sunnies on and off so the Photocromatic is real handy while the gratuated means you can read the instruments. Only snag the sweat would cloud them and always seemed to be cleaning them with the old shirt tail, as you do, I mean thats what they are for surely. Never any snags with seeing my own face as reported earlier, that would be dreadful. Also tried randolf engineering ones (ie US airforce current spec). They are good but heavy and gave me a sore nose, also not light sensitive so hard to see when it got darker. Now wearing non graduated Serengeties as have been unable to replace the old ones which fell apart after only 5 years of continious use. frankly these all look a bit nerdy so if you want too look cool buy some fasion ones to wear on days off and leave the good ones in the flight bag. Have tried this but the flying ones are so good i wear them all the time and leave fashion to others!!

Obviously none of you (those with serengetis, oakleys, raybans anyway) are in GA.
I have to make do with the elvis look-a-like pair I got for 50 cents the last time I bought a McDonalds happy meal.

I seem to remember seeing a current affairs show reporting the cheap ones were just as good as the others anyway, or do I have it ar$e up?

I am in GA and I owed it to my Visa with the credit limit from my former aviationless life, but my eyes are okay and they were tax deductable. Some money back! (ACA never subjected their cheap sunnies to the riggors of aviation. he he he)

BUGGER! I just trod on my RayBan wrap-arounds while down in the garage removing the battery from my bike for charging . Now I have one for each eye....

Based on the majority of posts here, looks like I'll have to hit the Credit Union for an overdraft to buy some Serengeti's.......

Let go of the looks you serengetis girlies. Buy yourself some sunnies that were designed by aviators for aviators. Look to the worlds airforces for the brands! Thin frames for peripheral vision, thin tmples (arms) for comfort and glass lenses for durability. You get used to the weight.
