Post Boeing ND

Interested in your opinion re use of the ND during approach. Boeing says leave it in MAP mode. During VOR approach the PNF should use VOR to backup the raw data. During ILS both pilots have raw data on the PFD yet many airlines require the PNF to select APP mode. In my opinion this does not add anything of value, and takes away a lot of info needed for backup, including a picture of the approach, the waypoints, crossing heights, navaids, missed approach track, ground track and (most important when doing the LOC intercept) the trend vector.
Can anyone who uses APP mode justify this?

On the 75/76 the PNF selects raw data ils so that the DME is available. If the ils has no associated DME then both pilots can remain with the ND on the map.

On the 737-800, its the company SOP to use the EXT MAP if the approach is in the FMS.
Regardless of the approach.
This is to give the complete picture, and using the machine as it was designed to be used.
If however you have to manufacture your approach, the the PF will select raw data not later than the FAF.

This is how boeing have suggested the machine be used...so be it !!
