"Fire On Wing" on Approach to JFK
Just reported on Fox News. 25 emergency units standing by.

More than 100 firefighters were dispatched Sunday to John F. Kennedy International Airport in Queens awaiting the arrival of a plane that is said to be on fire, according to the fire department. The fire department received a call shortly after 5 p.m. that an airborne plane was on fire. "Right now the plane is in the air and it appears like it might be dumping fuel before it lands," said a spokesman for the Fire Department. In response to the reports, 25 fire units and 106 members were dispatched the airport. "We are there on standby waiting for it to land," said the Fire Department spokesman. "Unclear if it’s the engine or a wing." The spokesman said he did not know when the plane was likely to land. And officials were unsure how serious the situation was. |
Strange thread title. Nobody has said there's a wing on fire, nobody even knows whether there -is- a fire... Calm down, at least for now.

What else would they expect? The flight crew are supposed to have parachutes and leap out of the plane at the first sign of danger; then let the fire supression system do the work. :rolleyes: |

During World War 2, there was a very nice song: "coming in on a wing and a prayer" the words included things like: with our faith in the lord and our full crew aboard, we're coming in on a wing and prayer. Usually this meant that an engine was on fire or had failed. phrases like this, and my favorite: TARMAC have become part of the lexicon of the uninformed press. so, they landed safely and that's good, the firefighters had a nice drill, and we should all concentrate on better mx. |
Tower controller who handled flight saw flame followed by smoke come out of engine shortly after take off. Speculates that it was bird and / or compressor stall. (sounds similar to thomson)

It now turns out, according to the NYTimes, that there was no fire at all (other than the possible cstall seen by the tower on takeoff).

The Boeing 767 crew reported they had lost the left hand engine (PW4060), climbed to 5000 feet, dumped fuel and returned for a safe landing on runway 04L about 50 minutes after departure. |
