More than 100 firefighters were dispatched Sunday to John F. Kennedy International Airport in Queens awaiting the arrival of a plane that is said to be on fire, according to the fire department.
The fire department received a call shortly after 5 p.m. that an airborne plane was on fire. "Right now the plane is in the air and it appears like it might be dumping fuel before it lands," said a spokesman for the Fire Department.
In response to the reports, 25 fire units and 106 members were dispatched the airport.
"We are there on standby waiting for it to land," said the Fire Department spokesman. "Unclear if it’s the engine or a wing."
The spokesman said he did not know when the plane was likely to land. And officials were unsure how serious the situation was.

Good to know plane safely landed. Now we can trash the initial press reports.
Title of this thread probably reflected the initial AP report (where Fox probably got their report):
Plane coming to NY airport has possible wing fire
AP – 8 mins ago
NEW YORK - A fire official says emergency crews are waiting for a plane at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport after reports of flames spewing from one of the aircraft's wings.

"The pilot was extremely calm as he approached the airport, according to a live feed from the air traffic control tower."
What else would they expect?
Engine fire on JFK-bound plane investigated by authorities, wing on fire as plane dumps fuel: report

The flight crew are supposed to have parachutes and leap out of the plane at the first sign of danger; then let the fire supression system do the work.

I thought this was the best part of the report !
[ NY Daily News Report quoted in posts above ]
The plane can fly with just one engine but it was told to abort the nine-hour flight to Russia

ya know:
During World War 2, there was a very nice song: "coming in on a wing and a prayer"
the words included things like: with our faith in the lord and our full crew aboard, we're coming in on a wing and prayer.
Usually this meant that an engine was on fire or had failed. phrases like this, and my favorite: TARMAC have become part of the lexicon of the uninformed press.
so, they landed safely and that's good, the firefighters had a nice drill, and we should all concentrate on better mx.

Tower controller who handled flight saw flame followed by smoke come out of engine shortly after take off. Speculates that it was bird and / or compressor stall. (sounds similar to thomson)

The fun begins at just before 29 minutes into this tower recording:

They ask for 'straight out' just like in the simulator. A couple of JetBlue crews report seeing a flash, one says it was about 300 feet AGL and suggests they sweep the runway for FOD.
They continue with Departure 30 seconds into this clip:

The track log of the flight is here:
FlightAware > Track Log > DAL30 > 21-Nov-2010 > KJFK-UUEE
Don't know if this was a GE engine but Shore Guy had a timely query about B-763 engine flameouts earlier today:

Congratulations to all the pros who got the plane back on ground safely!

The Boeing 767 crew reported they had lost the left hand engine (PW4060), climbed to 5000 feet, dumped fuel and returned for a safe landing on runway 04L about 50 minutes after departure.

"News Flash! Newspaper gets it wrong! Stop the presses!"
If you mean the New York Times, they apparently were just about the only ones to get it right.
