I’ve also read the readers’ comments. All the exaggeration by the journalist results in an abundance of people who coolly comment that the Daily Mail is wrong and that this is not really dramatic at all!

Not sure why the moderator did not like our quips about the mixture control...Is not "leaning off peak" the proper technique to keep just this kind of thing from happening?

Its one thing to have increased fuel burn and fouled plugs...it is another thing when it gets to the point as it did here for LH.
