Lufthansa rolls out Boeing 747-8
It's a bit of a second rate A380 in my opinion.

The new aircraft owes much to inspiration from Lufthansa – it fits ideally in the Lufthansa fleet. Seating around 380 passengers, the Intercontinental slots in perfectly between the Airbus A380 (536 seats) and the A340-600 (306 seats).

747-800 is indeed yummy, and no doubt retains the "pilot's
airplane" concept 747s are known for. I'd even sign a bloody
bond if I could get a job flying it - and I don't sign bonds!
And I agree its better than that waddling pregnant duck 380
that Airboos trundled out a few years ago - and no doubt the
new '47 will be more enjoyably satisfying to fly too.

Fantastic to see the 747 carrying on into the 21st century!
The 747 is a 20th century icon and changed air travel for the masses.
I hope more airlines see the light and order them.

Yes I agree,I don't know why there is a B747 v A380 and I don't understand why the presumption of "...It is not A380..." No its not!
Perhaps there is ignorance, of the history, performance, etc. of the B747...
As it may sound bias, B747 will always be B747 not A380. Airbus cannot compete Boeing for many reasons especially for the flight systems and operations.
Although the latter was brought to compete directly, personally I don't think its fair to compare or contrast. Boeing are concentrating in direct flights market instead of hub to hub. Hence the B787, 777, etc.
The fact is, B747 will be phased out in a few years times.
To all the A380 fans, to rub it in, A380 will not be able to make the legendary landing at the Kai Tak, ever, for obvious reasons. wohoo!

I'm sure, being a Boeing, it'll end up hitting it's performance specs and be both cheaper to maintain long term, and much simpler for the engineers to repair when it gets broken, unlike the old Airbus philosophy of over promising every performance aspect by 10-20%.

would have thought all the old blue chip long haul Boeing stalwarts like SAA Qantas ANZ Cathay would have also jumped on the 747-8i

i would have thought Boeing would have done any deal on the table better than ABus for them to clinch a BA 747 order...very surprising.
but then again seems BA is going the way forward of more seats in one plane and having less frequencies...hence the 380 order
