Birmingham SW departures using waypoint MOSUN.

Instead of joining at Compton VOR most SW bound traffic, ex-Brum, heads for the Brecon area, via waypoint MOSUN.
Why isn't it listed as a SID?

Probably because it doesn't go through controlled airspace and exact routing can vary due to military activity, it can also be unavailable completely due to the military as it is under their control.

Thnx for the expeditious response.
For a MOSUN departure would they laise with London Mil themselves, whilst still on stand, or just file a flightplan in the normal way and ops do the negotiations?
Forgot to add that they come back that way too, albeit usually in the wee small hours.

Airspace closures are notamed or flight plans are rejected by Eurocontrol if the routing isn't available, quick reroute by Ops and depart via COWLY instead.

Birmingham ATC can provide details of the MOSUN procedures [bit lengthy for this post]. In the near future the service may be provided by "Western Radar"...a NATS unit which provides ATSOCAS in various bits of sky in the South and West up to FL195 [FL245 in an active TRA]. I should mention the small-print and advise that the route is outside controlled airspace.
Talk to you soon maybe!

From the pilots end, ops will file a flight plan that will be something like EGBB HON MOSUN PERUP then enroute. The route is only open certain times of day and days of the week. We would call for clearance as usual. Ground/delivery will come back with something like "climb straight ahead 3 miles, left turn direct Mosun climb altitude 6000' " for runway 33, or for 15 "standard noise, right turn direct Mosun climb altitude 6000'. If memory serves 15 noise is runway heading to 1nm IBIR, right turn track 170 until 4 miles IBIR then we would hang a right towards mosun.

Thanks chaps for going to the trouble of providing quite a comprehensive 'heads up' on the MOSUN enigma. Well, it was to me before now.
