Two MiG-35s spotted in UKID off Stornoway

Just had an extraordinary call from a twitcher friend in Stornaway that he's just seen two MiG-35s through his bins. Sounds like they had penetrated UKID. Friend is better at spotting Stella's Eiders that Russian jets, but he does know his planes. Wondered if anyone else had heard similar? Seen at 12.35 BST travelling low and fast towards mainland.

Sure it wasn't some USAF F15's? I live at the total other end of the country but have seen them flying over me at speed before and they looked similar to a MIG 35 with twin tail fins ect.

Good thought, but as I write, an email has arrived from MoD buddy. Seems like they were Russian. All hell has broken out in Whitehall. Will confirm here if they were MiG-35s.

<<All hell has broken out in Whitehall.>>

Haven't seen anything on the media to suggest this is happening. Excuse my ignorance but what does UKID mean please? I cannot find anything on Google.

I think he's trying to allude to the ADIZ!

You can see where the mis-ident comes from? F-15 two seaters operate in the UK.

The Russian carrier is on exercise in the Barents Sea. The Russians during 2009 conducted flight testing with MiG-29 so they do operate them now and again. As the Kuznetsov is in the Barents then it would take a lot of refuelling to get two Fulcrums down near the UK. The tanker support alone wouldn't go unnoticed. Also those carrier variants are not MiG-35s. Kuznetsov currently deploys Su-33 Flanker and Su-25 Frogfoot.

There have been lots of these misidentification. See following.

Last month there were claims of A-10 operating in the UK in Russian markings!

They were in the UK last month (as you probably know), but not in Russian markings!

At a time where Cameron is currently in Russia for talks, and relationships have never been the best of lovers, I'm sure the last thing our MoD wants is a couple of Russian fighters hovering around our airspace uninvited...

Sounds like a very generous and thoughtful swap to me. The Russkies can keep the chinless toff.

Send more metal please Vlad.
