Thunderstorms.
On the evening of the 14th July I was waiting at Blackpool airport to carry out my first lesson for my PPL after years of being in the front with someone showing me what to do I decided it was time to do my PPL.
Anyway before I digress my lesson was cancelled due to big active cells in the area which is fine by me, safety and all that.
Having looked at the rainfall radar for that time the Scottish Borders / Pennines down to the East Midlands was one big bright echo return with heavy rain and frequent lightning.
Just wondering how would you get into Manchester when there was a ring of storms round it? Also whilst waiting for it to blow over (It didn't) a BAE 146 from Munich crossed the airfield to Warton. My last question is that aircraft would of had to decend through this bad weather, would it of been bumpy? And is lightning not a risk if flying directly through it (If they did) I cannot see how they avoided it!
Is there a way of getting historical satellite pictures, rainfall radar for the time in question? (18:30)
Thanks in advance.

Thunderstorms
I was on the BE flight from Southampton that was
running err... a bit late due to aircraft going tech!
We were advised we routed west to avoid a cell over London / Oxford
then a hold over the peak district somewhere due to, and I quote..
"An active cell on the extended centreline" So the approach from the east
was out.
We held for about 10-15 min then routed anti clockwise over north
Manchester / Bolton, a route I've NEVER done before. Bright clear
sunshine, with nasty grey Cumulo-nimbus all round us.Then turned in
over Liverpool for a clear approach.
Bit bouncy the last 2-3 min but not bad at all.
Interesting flight!

Cheers Dave for your input seems an interesting flight!
The flight from Munich to BAE systems Warton would of had to come through the wall of storms somewhere! Just wondered if they went over the top and descended in a hold pattern very late (i.e over Blackpool) or just bit the bullet and went through thr mess!

Makes a change for the TAF to be right at Blackpool! It seems to have its own micro climate! All bad weather normally follows the M6 corridor as Blackpool is 20 miles West it misses out!
I could of flown off to the South West or North West or stopped in the circuit problem is if closed in I would of had to go to the IOM!

Thanks Wingo for your time in responding to me I appreciate it. Good point about ATC in some lesser developed countries it would be down to you to pick a hole manually!
I take it the tops of these storms where no higher than FL 180 if you passed over them? You must of had a quick climb out of LBA FL180 by Bolton area is quick isn't it? Or did you know about the situation already?
It seems like this week has seen lots of build up and now strong winds! Summer it isn't!
Cheers again Wingo.

There was a bmi Baby inbound Manchester from Newquay - Usually they'll come over the Liverpool area heading for MIRSI but because of weather this one carried on up to Barrow (FL70 from Liverpool) then turning directly to ROSUN. DESIG departures were turning left after departure (23s) so there was alot cells around North/NW Manchester

ATC certainly would of been streteched with the amount of variants in local weather. I live directly under the ROSUN hold and a cell was there for a good 90mins and seemed to be stationary!

Wouldn't that flight have been better off sitting it out on the ramp at Detroit rather than flying all the way to Chicago and then almost all the way back?
I was on a flight inbound to EMA on Wednesday night - we flew a slightly more easterly track from Clacton to avoid cells in the Milton Keynes area and then passed through the line to the E of Leicester. We, I assume, selected the least bumpy way through although there was a very brief but very viloent area of turbulence which caused a few screams!
Our approach was to Runway 09 and on finals we could see a very active cell some 10 miles N of the airport which was producing forked lightning.
After passing through the cloud the rest of the descent was very smooth.

Even putting the pax on a bus would have been a better option, although I assume the plane and crew needed to position to Flint for scheduling.
Maybe they thought they could find a way through which seems a bit optimistic looking at that storm.

Meteo Weather Meteox.com - Archive
Put time 1930 in for 14th July as it works on CET not BST
Never mind the UK - what about the line of storms over Holland, Belgium and the German border and down across France!
Cheers
