Vulcan at Southport?

Hey folks,

I just received an E-mail from the Southport organisers apparently confirming the above for Sunday. The obvious question being does anyone have the 'inside track' on the likelihood at this point? I realise she's not the easiest or cheapest to put in the air.

I've not seen her since her last show at Woodford many years ago so it would be a real highlight if she was going up.

Any thoughts would be welcome,

Cheers

It's confirmed on the VttS website, so that means it's going.

Subject to weather, serviceability etc.

Yep, flying over Ringway between 4pm & 4.30pm my mate says who works there. Is it not going to Woodford at all!? Should really given the history and recent news of closure.

Or is something better planned for Woodford?

Cheers for the responses folks.

Typical though, we'll travel 60 miles to see it and then the darn thing flies virtually past the house on its way through!

Just got back from Southport airshow, and I have to say it was crap!! BIG gaps between aircraft and bad excuses from a bad pa system...the saving grace was the display by a glider of all things...The model yes model aircraft just didn't cut it

PA38, I have to agree whole heartedly, this was the worst airshow i have ever visited, how they can have the cheek to Charge £5 per car and £8 per person after that is beyond me. The flying display itself was so poor, in all honesty this could have been compressed into 1 hour , to try and stretch it to 4 hours ???

Compared to previous years when this has been a good day out for the family his was a disaster, children wanted to go home after an hour or so as they were bored, they need to have a serious look at this or change the name to Southport show.

Had a ride out to Southport Airshow this afternoon. Having read the reports from yesterday I was unsure what to expect. I thought this afternoon's show was OK. Arrived at about 14:00 so missed the "Reds", but saw most of the rest of the show, really went to see the Vulcan so was not disappointed.

The PA system was best described as "variable": up on the "prom", not good but I spent some time down on the beach not far from where the light a/c were parked and in this area it was quite acceptable.

£ 5:00 ticket (advance purchase) and £ 4:30 train fare, so not an expensive trip out.......!!!

I too took the Wife and Kids today.........Arrived at 1245 just in time to watch the Reds from the dunes.......toyed with the Idea of paying to go in.....Me, The wife and two kids....(1 under 5) plus a £5 car parking £26..........expensive in my eyes........decided to have a walk and then asked what was in the Airshow Perimeter...........did'nt sound all that good......the Guy on the gate advised us to tell the payment kiosk that we were visiting Matalan......got in for nothing in the end and I must say that if I would have payed that amount I would have wanted my money back.........why can't we have a decent airshow in the northwest?.........Bring back Woodford for one final swansong!!........on the display .....the Typhoon was excellent and so were the Lynx and Merlin.........saw the Vulcan flying low over Wigan on our way back home........Needs to be more in the flying display........

I don't know the first thing about organising an airshow other than it can't be that easy but this was a bit of a let down to be honest.

I assume a lot of the exotics are.....otherwise engaged....so can't really complain about that but the overall impression, without being too harsh, was 'straight out of the box'.

The two real exceptions were the Vulcan sweeping in at what seemed like tree-top level and one really hard working glider pilot with an incredibly agile display. The typhoon can't really fail to impress even stood still so doesn't really count, but the lack of fanfare and the three hour wait certainly made it a tough crowd even for that beast.

Well I enjoyed it and so did little lurkio. How come nobody has mentioned the Blades? Superb flying. Typhoon, nice and loud, just like the Lightning in the old days. Vulcan, worth every penny on its own. Reds, hampered again by the weather but quite impressed in them going into a loop from the run-in and reappearing from the cloud in a different formation.

They're putting on an airshow, not at an airport but at the seaside. The weather will always be a factor. If we want timing perfection we go to Farnborough or Paris or if we want shopping we go to Tesco. Give 'em a break and be grateful someone still lets fast jets fly low and fast where we can see them.

Big thanks to all who displayed from both of us here.

Have to agree it would be nice to see Woodford used for one last biggie.

Spot on Lurkio...i agree wholeheartedly.

We cannot expect the organisers of events like Southport to have a bottomless pit of money. Every aircraft costs money to bring in, and they don't come cheap.

It's all very well to say that there were 22 aircraft a few years back and only 15 this time round...but there was more of everything a few years ago. Those days are gone....

We had the gorgeous Catlalina, the Seafire / Sehawk combo...beautiful aircraft both giving great displays.
We had cracking demonstrations from the Merlin and the Lynxes, the Reds (as previously mentioned) did a sterling job in what were then very tricky conditions as well as the Hawk, Blades (outstanding), Team Guinot & the Swift Aerobatic Team. Not to mention 558.

Yes it may have been a tad expensive, yes, getting off the beach was a tad 'disorganised' but that's the way it is there! I wouldn't expect anything else!

If you want organised, perfect flying demonstrations then visit Farnborough, RIAT or Paris for your exotics and leave us general public to pay to watch what we want to - there's clearly the demand there as yesterday it was VERY full.

Many thanks to the organisers....of course more aircraft would be fantastic but the money has to come from somewhere.....

Manofman - if this was the worst airshow you've ever been to you should have been at Windermere this year (admittedly free entry)...1 aircraft an hour...all made up for by a breathtaking display from 558 though!.

I for one will be back at Southport next year...congratulations to all involved.

I have to agree with those who say it wasn't the best of experiences...

Yes, there's probably a shortage of loud military stuff this year due to other committments but surely they could have put on a better display given this is supposed to be the North West's "premier" air display. Yes it was great to see the Reds but I can see them at many other smaller events, and yes it was nice to see a Catalina in all its glory but as another writer comments, the model aircraft display was a joke and in all probability a tacit admission as to how much they were covering for the lack of a decent display.

The sideshows/stalls etc were of a much inferior quality and the catering trucks were just taking the michael with their ramped up prices - it really annoys me when you can't even get a simple ice-cream without paying through the nose for it...

Not sure that I will be going again next year...
