prefix
I know that for a TAF the FC and FT indicate the validity period.
But I've also come across the prefix SA for METARS and SP voor SPECIs. What does this stand for (SA and SP)? And what do they indacte? A validity period? A METAR is just valid for one hour right?

A METAR is not valid for any time period. It is an actual observation at a specific time. They are normally made at hourly or half hourly intervals. If the weather changes by a significant degree a special observation,SPECI, will be made and issued.
