Question JMC at ACE - aproach question

Just an innocent question to the guys in green. I was following a 75 into ACE (03)the other day, CAVOK and daylight (rare times for the charter world I know). I was No2 to the 75 who had no-one infront of him from well before the LZR and he chose to do the full procedure onto the ILS. Please don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong in doing that, but is it company policy?, I know you can't land on 21. It's just that we were trying to do a visual in and ended up taking just as long as a full vor/ils.

At the end of the day the choice is theirs, but it always seems daft to not do a visual approach if the weather is suitable. Wouldn't have thought they couldn't do visual approaches...

I know it can be irritating as we all like an expeditious visual to 03 when it is appropriate, but maybe they were line training or had some other valid reason.

Why should he explain his actions to an anonymous questioner on Pprune?

Perfectly valid VOR/DME approach onto 21 at ACE -. .slightly offset and I must admit that the unusual. .terrain does make the aspect outside a little unusual. Nonetheless as long as the approach is. .flown accurately no problem and any go-round is. .straight out over the water as far as I remember. .which is always a bonus.. .. .An expeditious visual approach in good weather. .can usually save a few minutes which is important. .in a tight summer schedule. This should not however be taken as an excuse for 'cowboy' tactics. . .. .On this occasion the guy maybe felt he needed some practice or was on a line-check - no problem. .either way. Only danger perhaps was that by electing to do the full monty he would have allowed a dozen Binter aircraft to appear from all. .points of the compass whilst he was letting down. .over the bay !

Yes we can do visual approaches, yes we can land on 21. I think only land on 21 in daylight.

Talking

Thanks to most for sensible answers, Harpy - chill out! the comment about landing on 21 I've found out came from the agent, so is probably as reliable as a parliamentary answer. I wasn't questioning the guy's judgement, it was a genuine enquiry about policy.
