Planespotters be proud of yourselves!

We all know planespotters come in for a bit of stick most of the time, for whatever reason. I like looking at aircraft, always have, although registrations etc is a step too far for me. However, I follow many forums on this site and whenever somebody posts a question about where or what a particular aircraft is, there are usually several informative posts helping out with the answer, and sometimes photos or a guide as to where that a/c can be found.

Now.....don't ask why but I was idly passing time on the web, looking for a lorry name to match my young daughter's. It's a very well-known UK haulage company, and I thought it would only take a couple of minutes to see if there was such a named lorry. Bl**dy h£ll.....what a sinister lot those lorry spotters are. Talk about obsessively and jealously guarding your 'spots'. Loads of enthusiast sites, but all charging an annual fee before they'll share info! What a contrast to the aviation types, most of who will help others out for the love of their hobby!!!!!!!

When I was at an air display last year I was appalled by the bad behaviour, abusive language and downright rudeness of some of the spotters. I was glad to see that Fairford (if it had gone ahead) had banned the tented encampments at the crowd line.

Hedge chimps

Joking aside I've never seen the attraction but live and let live. I did wonder though about one I saw at Luton at 5am one frosty November morning. His young baby was asleep in a child seat in his car.

Does the U.K. lead the world in the aircraft, train, bus, lorry/truck spotting fanaticism?

No problem with them [when I was young I used to do it] Was down at Thunder City three years ago, two skygods emerge from the hangar with all their gear on, climb into the silver Lightning two-seater, and start the engines. Two Brits other Brits arrive, note the number, and say cheerio to me. I say 'but this is about to fly!!' [it was merely feet away from us]. No, we are not staying, we've got the number!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...............Some have no soul!!!

Each to their own and all that is what I say!

If you want to start trivulising a hobby then Golf would be an interesting place to start IMHO!!

Anyway, most Spotters are a good bunch....Sure, there are a few extreme characters! Someone has mentioned the airshow photography freaks...These are the hardcore nutters who seem to hold a "my stepladder/lens is bigger than yours" competition at every major airshow and sod the rest of you!!

Bonkers !!!

Yes, Absolutely and proud of it !!!!!

Never have been ashamed of the pastime, had many a discussion with puzzled types. It often amuses me when I ask them "what do you do then" answer is usually "fishing" (drowning worms !) or watching 22 overpaid men chasing a plastic ball !

So whos bonkers then ?

Well I for one always give a wave from my little winda as we trundle our way down to Alpha 1 past the viewing park at Manch. And Im oft amazed at the number of ladies and gents down there in the poo weather, and at ungodly hours when I for one would be in bed if not for ferrying our punters about. So I take my hat off to your dedication and stoic Britishness

Well, I would take my hat off if they issued one, but I'd probably only keep me sarnies in it anyway.............

Revised list*.

Nice.
Bonkers.
Touchy.

* Warning. This list was formed using sweeping generalisations, untested assumptions and just a little observation.
