Die Orka Wind... Today in Germany... Explanations?
Hi, I was curious about this strong wind happending today (Jan 18th I guess not only in Germany but many places in Europe).
The news call it ORKA WIND...
At the begining I thought it was a kind of FOEHN WIND, since the temperature is very warm... but I realise it is not only here happening but also in Norhten Germany as well as other places in Europe...
Can someone give me an explanation why do we have this strong wind today?
Is it because of the strong Pressure Gradient Force??
(As you can see in the chart, a High going on in Spain and Northen Italy and a Low in Scandinavia... with a lot of isobars in between, very steep) could be that?
How often this phenomenon happens?
I appreciate a technical answer
(my first winter living in Europe and I want to familiarize myself with the local weather).
AirGus.-

...And the award for the best take-off of the day...
...Goes to the Paris-bound 146 at EGBB departing from runway 15-33 today, seen by millions on BBC TV National News.
Made more dramatic by the telephoto lens, but I thought they handled it well, and the wings were always level.
...Cracking crosswind limits for the 146, eh Grommit?

Used to work at BHX and I could go and watch the action which could be mesmerising when only 15/33 available and wind was 240/45 gusting >.
Recall one well known local in his DC-9-15 landing 15 with final instant wind of 240/55.
Most were diverting that day
Around the undershoot, the view of the inbounds was interesting as you pondered whether any of the airfield was in view from the cockpit
I'll find a photo from awhile back later.

There was a cracking clip on the ITV news of what looked like an A320 approaching MAN yesterday. Looks like a good job of keeping on the centreline but the aircraft was rolling like a pig and the wings flapping hard enough not to need the engines!!
Glad everyone made it safely up and down yesterday!

Orka wind
Interesting, never heard this one before. A quick google finds this ..
~Orka- A village at the edge of Hyrule. Named after the man who taught the Hero of Wind how to use a sword.

A thread of Nordic mythology which I have no time to explore

Any mention of this incident in the national news?
Plane Drama as Gales lash Island
I presume it is one of the LET410's from Blackpool?
Reminds me of the old Dan Air Nord 262 that also suffered the same problem.
