Which airport, what type of aircraft ?

Probably some of the paint peeling off or something; PU- is not allocated (but would be Brazilian if it was: http://life.itu.int/radioclub/rr/ap42.htm ).

Just realised that the codes I found were for something completely different anyway! Should have paid attention to what I was looking at...

PT, that list you linked to: presumably some of the call signs listed are for things other than aircraft? Eg XJA-XOZ Canada... Any ideas?

Yes, that's the International Telegraph Union list of allocations for anything radio-related. Covers ham call signs etc., but since airplanes have radios then the ITU assigns their callsigns too. And thus the international reggie prefixes de facto.
Explains why 'new' countries don't often get prefixes which make sense - the obvious choices are already assigned.

Indeed. Turns out PU- is in use by Brazil for ultralights:

Which means I will be no help whatsoever in identifying the type of airplane

Thanks for all that folks. It was an RV, and looked most like an RV-6A, the only one I recognise as I have time in one. And it was in KOSH - Oshkosh, WI

"Luiz Carlos Novi considered adding extra fuel capacity to his RV-9 before" - just goes to show how crap I am at telling one RV from another....
