BA084 security alert: LHR

Hi,

There was a security alert on BA084 from Vancouver to LHR this afternoon. All I heard was the PAN announced on approach, then the LHR Director asking the FO whether the door to the cockpit was locked and also something about Tornados.

On landing the plane was told that security and police would be waiting at the stand.

Does anyone know anything more about this??

Thanks,
MM

I find this a little hard to believe.....how do you know it was the FO and did the controller really ask this? Standing by for more.

well, I found it hard to believe as well - the Director did preface the question with: This might seem a silly thing to ask but....

Everything is exactly as I heard it - no more, no less.

AND Mr Myrtleman.. you have contravened the Wireless Telegraphy Act by publishing transmissions heard on ATC frequencies.. To quote from elsewhere on PPrune: "....if you pass on information from what you hear, through Bulletin Boards, the press, or by setting up a live feed, then it's entirely feasible to feel Ofcom's hand on your collar and an appointment before the beak."

Good luck - it's only a few months in clink.....

We will take Mr Myrtleman's little indiscretion aside for a sec......you played the game for longer than most Bren, you ever ask a question like this? (Granted, the world is a little different now as to when you started, but)

Nope..... never did that, but you never know who is leaning over someone's shoulder asking them to do something. I once had to tell a guy he was about to be shot down - and he thought it was a joke!!

Does this mean I will get in trouble for relaying an anecdote (betwixt me and ATC) from when I was learning to fly??????

Goes like this: conducting glide and flapless t & g's for the first time, when FI tells me to make the next a glide approach without flaps for a full stop. My call to ATC, "glideless approach to land".

"Yes you bloody well will" came the response. I was in the clubhouse before I got it.

So in a nutshell, it has been a good few hours since this thread was origionally posted and nothing has been released about a threat to a potential BA aircraft so can it be assumed that this thread is a spoof???

Wombat, all is explained in this thread. I guess the simple answer is contained at the bottom of it.

As to the validity of the origin of the thread..............

Doesn't that kinda put the ATC humour thread on the ATC Issues forum in jeopardy though, Jerricho?

Slightly off topic I know but United Airlines offers live ATC communications to all passengers on their audio entertainment system. They operate 22 flights either into or out of LHR every day.

Often the Captain actively advertises it in his/her passenger brief.

The incident on the BA084 involved an aggressive male passenger who ended up being restrained by the cabin crew and were assisted by four male passengers.Passenger arrested on arrival.Hopefully they'll throw the book at him.

I don't quite see the problem WRT disclosing information from communications on ATC frequencies; in the thread referenced, the OFCOM material quoted mentions no such restriction - PPRuNe Radar produces the 'passing on information' offence out of a hat, so to speak.

I can't see it as being an issue; unlike, for instance, police transmissions, ATC transmissions are of course on widely-published frequencies.

Not sure about reporting in print (or on a forum) but “pirated” live feeds from UK ATC were put off the Internet some time ago after various threats. Seems petty to me when any spotter can use an airband Rx and us PPL’s can tune in any time we are in range.

Personally I don’t see the attraction of listening in but each to his own. And I do seem to spend a fair amount of time on this forum
Hopefully they'll throw the book at him
Quite, I hope it's a very heavy one

Spotters also have access to ACARS via computer links and know everything about your aircraft. Not good if it were to fall into the wrong hands!!.
