Speed and range

How do the speed and range of the unmanned toy replicas scale?

I think this series had linear measures scaling 1:16. Does it mean that the OEW and MTOW are scaled 1:4096? If so, then the wing area is 1:256 original, and wing loading 1:16 of the original... meaning the IAS should be 1:4 of the original, at least at low Mach numbers.

But if you have a plane whose size is scaled 1:16, and speed as 1:4, how is the thrust scaled? If the thrust/weight ratio is the same as for original and thrust is therefore scaled 1:4096, then the takeoff run duration should be 4 times shorter... less reaction time for pilot.

And how far can this plane be remotely controlled from?

Oceanic

The spooks run UAVs TransPac and I recall two modellers have flown r/c from Newfie to Ireland.

The trick is to have somebody with a radio at both ends and a GPS for in between.

I remember seeing a series of programmes on 'Discovery Real Time' on the construction of a C17 ....... scale in same League as the MD11 above ..... the construction team consisted of a number of very brilliant engineers whose attention to detail in all areas but in particular, 'structural integrity' was amazing ..... the RAF C17 guys in the UK gave them a 'Royal Tour' of the real thing at one stage in the programme ....

Bre - I guess we have too many advertising links on that URL for the site, so I have replaced it with this

The radios that control these RC airplanes are good for about one kilometer if I recall, but of course you can't effectively see it anywhere near that far.

It becomes a 'speck' in the sky very quickly, even with the sun in a favourable position!

The jets are centrifical compressor types, and have inbuilt EECs to control starting and operating EGT, and include electric start these days.

I've found the jets are far to fast to have any real fun with, the thing is passed your control point VERY quickly, and you have to be aware that the turning circle at these speeds may exceed your effective sighted distance!

I have stuck with the prop driven types with single cylinder i/c engines, much more fun and don't cost anywhere those jet types.

Cheers, FD
