A single engined take-off IS quite possible on some twin-engined aircraft. I have been on such a flight and flown twenty miles over the sea.

Methinks B727 is a lot closer to the truth, and the source, than I would care to think. Beggars belief. I remain lost for words. Just thankful I don't live under a departure track or approach path these clowns might end up using.
