Heathrow vantage points
morning all
i wasn't sure where to put this topic, but think its more appropriate here.
i have a sim ride on saturday at heathrow, and wanted to go down few hours before to do abit of 'spotting'. can anyone let me know of any good vantage points..without causing too much of a fuss.
thankyou in advance

Assuming they're on Westerlies on Sat then it will be 27L until 3pm - so you can get off at Hatton Cross underground and either watch from the car park or cross the road and walk down to Myrtle Avenue.
I believe there's a TU-154 that comes in around 9.30am on Sat

Spotting at Nice
Despite a number of searches I've not really been able to find out much about spotting, and more especially good photo locations, at Nice. I'll be there for a few days in April and was wondering if any Ppruners have recent experience of spotting at or near the airport.
All assistance greatly appreciated.

Hi I have been spotting at PMI many times,
There are a few good spotting locations around the Airport perimeter.
Firstly, The resort of Ca'n Pastilla is only a 5 minute bus/taxi ride away, From there the inbound A/C fly right over the bay of Palma, And then on finals over Ca'n Pastilla Beach.
If you walk down to the bottom of the resort in the Palma direction, There is a hill with a cycle track/path with a bench at the top.
The A/C fly right over on App to R24.
Another good spot is if you go over the motorway 'flyover' and turn left a road takes you down to the other end of the Airport, Where there is a layby by a roundabout and a nearby Fuel station.
I would say at this spot you are even closer to the landing A/C.
They do not always use the same runway all day, It can change dep on time of day.
The local Policia have never bothered anyone I know at PMI.
Sat is definately the best day - all day long. You will see just about every Airline on Sat, I logged over 300 on one Sat - awesome
Other good days are Sun - German day
Thu/Fri Scandinavian/German day.
Wed is too quiet, And Tue isn't brilliant.
If you are not staying locally, There is a bus every 1/2 hr to/from Palma.
You can catch it by the terminal or in Ca'n Pastilla.
There is limited viewing in the Terminal, You will only have access once you are Airside in Departures.
Have a good trip.

I knew I forget to mention something, I heard the Coronado was 'broken up' about 2 years ago, The last time I saw it was in 2005.
It lived down by the old Maintainence hangars for years.

As far as taking photo's is concerned I believe it is possible to get to the beach at the western end of the airport from where good photo's can be had, check on airliners.net, for general spotting the new terminal and adjacent car park can be used, Cafe inside upstairs has reasonable views of T2 & T1 stands through glass, outside again at the western end of the terminal is a drop off area which has some views of the runway and good views over the business ramp. A longish walk in the opposite direction along the road brings you to the other main business jet parking area and the Caravelle, they have put up netting which makes photography nearly impossible but still OK to read off regiastrations.
Hope this helps.

Public viewing areas?
I wanted to show my young son planes taking off at landing, but found that Southampton (our local airport) has no facilities for this.
Are there any localish (South Coast) airports that have decent public viewing areas? I don't want to be driving around with him looking for unofficial spots.
Seems pretty narrow minded of BAA not to encourage an interest in flying from an early age - although I'm sure Cameron would approve! ;-) Maybe I'll just let him watch the cycle path outside our house instead.

Best beer gardens near Heathrow?
Folks,
Apologies if this has been asked and answered before - I've searched and drawn a blank - but can any recommend pubs with beer gardens that sit on approaches / climb outs near Heathrow.
I know of the Green Man in Hanwell but it sits directly under 28L so you don't get an angle on arrivals.
Cheers

Hi Ferret,
If they're on Westerlies you could do worse than the Red Lion in Isleworth, it has a lovely beer garden with good views of aircraft on finals although it can be a little obscured by the trees, especially in summer. They often have a BBQ out back and sometimes bands play inside.

Spotting at Nice
Goodafternoon,
I was there a few years ago and if you go for good photo locations, don't think of having a lot of fun. All places can be reached by foot but walking in a carpark can get attention and very quick "sécurité aéroport" comes around and ask you to leave this area. As far for other photograph-locations, there is a place called "CAP 3000" and from there you can admire landings in the late afternoon (after 3pm) but you'll need a lot of mm's (minimum 300mm !). In my opinion, one of the less attractive airports for spotting.
Greetings, Karl
