Help UAL Capt Al Haynes Save his Daughter
Ladies and Gentlemen,
The following note was posted on our company website. It involves ret Capt Al Haynes, the hero captain that landed the crippled DC10 in Iowa with total hydraulic failure. Hero Pilot Trying To Help Save Daughter's Life As the captain of United Flight 232, SeaTac-based pilot Al Haynes helped save 184 people when he guided his disabled plane in for a crash landing back in 1989. Now he's asking for your help to save one more life. Capt. Haynes says he didn't have time to be scared when his plane went down that day in Sioux City, Iowa. But now, he is scared because his only daughter will die without a desperately needed bone marrow transplant. When Laurie Haynes Arguello, 39, was diagnosed with aplastic anemia two years ago the first thing she did, was call her father, Capt. Al Haynes. "I just called dad and said, 'What do we do?'" Arguello said. After two years of doctors appointments and transfusions, Arguello now needs a bone marrow transplant to survive. She has a donor, but not the more than $200,000 needed to pay for an operation no fully covered by insurance. It's a concern that keeps her awake at night. "My son's nine. My husband and I have been together for over 20 years. I have a lot to live for," she said. She has a lot of support from family and friends, who have launched a fund-raising campaign to save Arguello's life. For Capt. Al Haynes, Laurie's is another life he desperately wants to save. "It's another one, yeah, very important to me but, it's just another one. But if I can do it, I will. Any way we can," he said. Capt. Haynes says besides dealing with the recent deaths of his wife and son -- and now facing the illness of his daughter -- his greatest challenge was overcoming the survivor's guilt he felt after the crash HOW TO HELP Make a donation to National Foundation For Transplants at: NFT for Lauria Arguello P. O. Box 7781 Covington, WA 98042 Or go to www.transplants.org. look for Patient Campaigns and click on Laurie Arguello. (Editor’s Note: Click on the link in the upper left to find Laurie’s name.) **International Donations** We became aware of this problem earlier today and our web host technicians will be correcting it this afternoon. Actually, we had received some on-line international donations successfully, but they all had to put in fake states. We weren't aware of the situation prior to this time because we normally don't receive many donations from outside the United States. Our web-site donations page will be down for about one hour this afternoon while we make the adjustment. Thank you for support of the NFT campaign for Laurie Arguello. Sincerely, Janice Hill Manager of Communications [email protected] (800)489-3863 Your link wasn't working Blue&white, it is now |
Can somebody who knows about these things set up a UK account, preferably with gift aid status, and then transfer the proceeds to the USA?
|
For those of you that don't know (is there anyone?) the amazing story, by coincidence here's something I posted recently...
Capt. Haynes Story Top stuff. Haynes that is, not me. ;) |
I have just donated to the fund. It seems the least we can do for the daughter of such a brave and courageous man. Come on fellows. Send something and then let everyone know that you have done so to encourage others. This man has suffered enough for one lifetime. Merry Christmas, and may the Lord bless him and his daughter.

A problem with the website
I just sent in a donation but the website is setup for donations only from the USA. I had to select California as my home state in order for the donation to be accepted. I contacted the webmaster to tell her to modify the listing of states to include all Canadian Provinces as well as other countries as well. Hopefully this change will be made in the near future.
   |
As soon as the UK is added I'm in..
My thoughts and best wishes go to Capt Haynes and his daughter. |
Agreed - set up the UK end and I'm in... Danny - any way you can help set up a short term account for this purpose we can contribute to?
|
I second that ... would really like to help, even if I am a poor student!

I reckon that if for just one day, all UAL captains made an announcement that they were doing a collection during the flight, you'd rack up enough for the operation and for a nice recuperative break to boot.
I know of some crewmembers who have 'pet' charities & collect for it on their flights. When punters are told that it's for a guy who helped save many lives, the 'There but for the Grace... ' would kick in & it'd be rollin' in. I'm sure Mr Tilton wouldn't mind, given who it's for. |
The site will take only requires a USA Zip Code at the moment
anyone will do so if your outside the US simply use a friends or Hotels ZIP. Back to the top!! "What the cockpit team of United Flight 232 accomplished has never been replicated. The National Transportation Safety Board performed a number of simulations and was not able to get the plane on the ground safely. McDonnell Douglas, which manufactured the DC-10, and United Airlines simulated 45 flights under the same conditions of Flight 232 and did not have one successful landing." There was a great team with him then and he needs a great team with him now |
Most people who use ebay have a PayPal account, they are free and very easy to use. Perhaps we could set something up using that system. Very happy to make a donation.

I had the not only the honour to hear Al Haynes speak earlir this year but got to take him out to dinner afterwards. A delightful gentleman who, obvoiusly, doesn't deserve this.
If it can be sorted to pay ex Europe, then I'm in but, being only computer semi-literate and not having a paypal account, help! RT |
The way is clear
PLEASE TAKE NOTE. THIS IS HOW TO MAKE A DONATION IF YOU DON'T LIVE IN THE USA
As I stated in my post above I made a donation from Canada but I had to indicate I lived in California in order to satisfy the formula on the internet site. I sent an E-mail to the organization telling them of the shortcoming on the web site. Here is the reply. Dear Lu: Thank you very much for your comments. We already receive on-line donations from all over the world and I had not even noticed that they all had to indicate a state, along with their complete address. However, please be assured we have no difficulty in understanding the location of the international donors, since their complete address is included. I will talk with our web host people today to see if they can make the adjustment you requested. I just received your on-line donation and have your full Canadian address: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx. Thank you for supporting the NFT campaign for Laurie Haynes Arguello, and for taking the time to let me know of the donation page problem. Janice [email protected] Come on you guys from the UK, Europe and OZ as well as other areas. With your help it can happen. :ok: :ok: :ok: |
Please Help get the message out
To all concerned,
Please feel free to post my original message at your company websites. I personally met Capt Al Haynes and he is every bit the person everyone says. This afternoon, the donation website will be set up for international donations. Thanks for all the help. Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays. |
Just payed from UK and the site is now setup for overseas payments. Went straight through.
Aviate 1138 Two daughters of my own and Lauries plight really got to me. Hope all goes well. |

If I were a heavy UAL captain, I would be a little embarassed seeking donations. 200K is less than 1 year's salary, and I am quite sure he could manage this himself. Or with the help of a few of his UAL captain collegues or UA232 survivors. Over Christmas, spare a thought and some coin for the over thirty thousand children than die every day from greed :*

For all Winstun's doubts, I doubt raising the money is that easy. How many retired people can raise anything like a year's salary from their prior occupations? For that matter, how many people in full time work can do that? Furthermore, I suspect Captain Haynes' entire family have already dug deeply into their pockets...
